WTB - Vintage Wok AKA coolie pan
« on: March 26, 2017, 05:56:29 AM »
I know it is a long shot as it seems most people who own one love it, but I'm looking for a vintage wok with the brackets that fit both the 18" and 22" kettles.  (BTW, did you know there was also a wok for the 14"?!)

Thanks, fellas.

Are you referring to this ?? Yeah, pretty cool.  Don't see many around.

I didn't know they made a wok for the SJ.

@Mr.CPHo

I own three WoKs, none of them Weber designs.   But, your mention of one for the SJ set my mind whirling.  The SJ is 14" across and all three of my WoKs are just about that size.  Since I cook on one (or more) of my WoKs at least once a week and since I've always wanted to use it outdoors on one of my girls, I can barely wait to give one of my SJ's a chance to shine   ...   maybe chicken with black bean sauce stir fry or yellow Thai curry  :)

Tks,  SJ

Looking for Dark Blue MBH 22", Dark Green MBH 22", Yellow MBH 22", Glen Blue MBH 22", Avocado MBH 22".

So whats the difference between the vintage one and the current/newer design?  Theres the "gourmet system" wok that fits into the center circle of the gourmet grill.  Plenty of those around; and also this one I just came across this stainless steel one on ebay.  Might not be quite as vintage as the one you're talking about.  Interesting none the less!

I would love to answer your question and will do so once I have a vintage example to compare.🤞

@lksdrinker The vintage woks are made from high-carbon steel and are substantially larger than the newer models. They also have legs welded on the bottom side to allow it to be used on both 18" and 22" kettles while still leaving a perfect air gap between the top of the kettle bowl.

@SixZeroFour
I'm guessing that it doesn't say Weber on the wok & that we just should keep a lookout for the brackets welded on the side.  Is that correct?
Do you know if the one for the SJ has similar brackets?
Also, are the utensils Weber that came with it or are they some other brand that you use with it?
Just wanted to know what best to keep my eyes peeled for.
Thank you kindly for any answers you may have.
regards,
Hal

Thank you, 604, for adding pictures.  That will be very helpful to recognize one in the wild.

^ Very nice bear! They are amazing to cook on

@Mr.CPHo - The vintage wok's are generally very difficult to locate, but with your kettle luck these days Charlie it's likely only a matter of time before one falls in your lap!  ;D  ;D

Yes that is correct, there is no branding on either the Wok or the tools. The utensils shown above are the originals but of course there are a million sets out there that would work just fine if you can get your hands on the wok itself...

Do you know if the one for the SJ has similar brackets?

I have never seen one of the SJ models in the flesh but can only assume it would have the same feet welded to the bottom side. Would love to find one!

Correct.

Hard to tell... I believe if you look closely at the actual picture of the SJ Wok, it looks like it might have clips. I don't think we've seen one of these yet. @harris92, are you aware of a SJ wok in the wild?

Also, are the utensils Weber that came with it or are they some other brand that you use with it?

Pretty sure the pics that @SixZeroFour posted show original Weber wok utensils. The modern ones are currently available:
