It needs the mimic the H washer of the new style sweep. ...

But won't that lock the sweep blades to the bracket.. meaning that either the blades won't spin or (with enough force) the bracket will spin?
Okay now I'm going back for another re-fill!  :D

I'm the one that needs more coffee... You are correct, it will look pretty but not move... Fixed sweep would not be a good thing.
It would need a hole and an inset cut in .060 to accept the washer...

I've been confused by these things enough in the past & saw the train go off the tracks, but thought this time I'll let somebody else notice it......... 8)

You are correct! I'm having deja vu to the discussion @glrasmussen and I had last year. :)

O.K. I am not an engineer... Just vision stuff. So we need a .060 bar with support. Well at least the flat against bowl has to be .060. The only other way is to stamp a new H clip with longer legs... The die would be a big expense. Guess we need to find and hoard 7409 sweeps for the vintage or do the conversion. Both of these options would be less expensive, than redesigning. :'(

The ones I have are for the older style sweep.  Not the H clip style

I would be interested in buying one if you still have them available.  I could pay by PayPal if that is OK.   The hex nut on mine is quite rusted and will have to be cut off.  What do you suggest I use to reattach the new catcher bar and ash sweeper?  Would a nut with another hex key or bolt work?  Thanks.

Hi rdicarlo64 and welcome to the WKC.

You likely won't the direct replacement part for your old 7409 sweeps (which are secured with the rusted nut that would have to be cut off, thereby also ensuring you can't use the sweeps anymore.)

IF your sweeps are still OK, keep them and just get some radiator hose clamps (at least 1.25", 1.5" is better, 2" easier to work with ...) to secure your ash bucket ring to the leg sockets. You also have the option of buying a 2015 ash bucket and matching ring if the new style bucket interests you (go check out the MasterTouch in a store to see how it works.)

IF your old sweeps are also toast, do as Jeep says and buy the 7444 sweeps, either doing as I mentioned above or using @zavod44 's aluminum hanger bar replacement with it.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

I just took the 7444 sweep and ovaled the holes that the sweep bar goes into...fits good

This is basically the mod that i have planned for the ash catcher bars i made out of stock aluminum..ovaling the sweep handle holes to accomodate the thicker aluminum bar should easily work to fit the new ash sweeps...good to hear someoone elsebtried it and it works

The other option i have is not to modbthe holes in the ash sweep bracket..reason being ..modding the ash sweep bracket holes will accelerate rust...the ash sweep is made from alumunized metal so filing down the holes removes the thin layer of aluminum exposing steel..which will accelerate rusting...im working on another solution to avoid this...will update when i have time to get the mod on the bench

here is the picture of the 7444 attached to the MT ash ring.  I took the tab from the 7444 oval-ed out the holes on the tab to make room for the additional space needed for the ash ring retaining bar.

If there was a replacement tab available I would happily purchase it.  But a simple round file worked.

I dont have a picture of the tab prior to assembling it... I can take it apart tomorrow.

@Jeep is that a stock ash catcher bar or one from brian?

The original ash catcher accepts the new ash sweep with no mod ..at least...this experience may vary based on your bar condition.
