Been busy representing the long island chapter of the WKC, and it was a good week of scores..

First up, my $15 MT in blue.

And then I got this from an old boy scout guy. An 18" WSM for $75.

I cleaned them up but I lost the daylight, so tomorrow for clean pics. Had to order up some new grates. Also, the door is now on correctly.

Question:
Can I just order the thermometer and bezel for the newer model 18"WSM and simply install it by drilling a hole? Anyone do this upgrade?

I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

Well done!  I'd love to find a blue M/T like that.

Nice grabs! Yes, you can order them from Weber or e-replacements. I bought a few of them and put them on some kettles and my WSM shortly after I scored it.

FWIW, I prefer my door handle down so I know it's latched.

yes you can. when I upgraded Buddy, I got a thermo w/bezel from ereplacements.com.

here's a quick link. you can mix and match bezels w/thermos for the true factory effect or you can get the cheaper combo for the functionality.

I drilled my wsm. Worked well. Love it. Its just a wsm. Not a vintage kettle. I didn't drill the little tab I bent it over so it fit. Doesn't move at all once tightened well.

that's what I did for the tab on Buddy's thermo.

Thanks for all the replies. Is there any spot on the grill that is better to install a thermometer? I can see some personal preference. Is the top more accurate of the temp of the the smoker? Do you want it closer to the meat that is cooking? Does it even friggin matter? Or is the thermo pen the way to go? Wondering what works for you folks.

Nice scores! Already prepping the woman for a wsm. I have whiddled her down from "hell no!" To the ugly eye. That blue is nice.

I guess I'm different then because I drilled out for the tab.  2 small holes maybe an 1/8" diameter (or smaller) next to each other then wobble the drill bit back-n-forth to connect the 2 holes into a slit.  Pretty easy, actually, and you've already got the drill & bits out...

Mine was going into a OTG, so I just tried to mimic what Weber was doing on their lids.  Figured they did some research on it so that works for me.

Huh?  Blue 18?
I've always had gas...  And now a bunch of kettles because of this place.  Thanks!
