Touch up paint for dark-green porcelain
« on: July 27, 2013, 08:11:15 PM »
The previous owner of my dark-green SS Performer broke the handle off the lid and reattached it with crappy screws.  Sometime during this he also chipped the porcelain under the handle.  One of the jobs today was to replace the wimpy screws with some SS button-head-allen bolts and touch up the large chip under the handle.

I just wanted to let you know that Rust-Oleum makes a 'high heat' paint that is a VERY close match to the original color; not exact, but close.

Here's the can next to the lid:

As you can see, it's a 'flat' finish, so it's not an EXACT match, but certainly much better than a large BLACK chip in the finish:  (Sorry about the grease stain by the lid vent!)

Here are the numbers from the back of the can:

I posted this in case it helps somebody else who has a dark-green grill that needs some touch up.   (Trying to give-back to the grill-fellas here.)

Thank you sax.  I wonder if they make a gloss version of the same color.

Also, can you report back on how the color performs after being cooked on?

G$-
I found this same shade in a 'regular' spray can (gloss) finish, but those said they were only good up to about 200deg.  I looked for some gloss high temp 'engine' enamel, but this is all they had (flat finish).  Like I said, not perfect, but much better.

I'll let you know how this ends up working once we cook on it..

Maybe a coat of high heat clear over the top?

 That's great, SAX.............thanks for the testing & discovery..... ;D

the clear will gloss it up some, just not quite up to the original porcelain quality.........

I have used this paint to touch up the green kettle which I cook on most often.  It has lasted for a few months on the lid, but unsurprisingly, it is popping off of the kettle. Still, it looks better than having several rust spots all around the kettle.

Personally I like the rust spots and chips...give the kettle some character! That and I'm too lazy to search for exact matches to all the kettles I'd have to fix.

My position has been the same as Terry, i have yet to spray one.  Scars are scars.

I am considering some touch up for a future project, but doubt that will happen.  I still like to see what people are using, and since i have a green that matches sax's, itis nice to be able to see how his holds up.

Cool stuff!
