They still make them here, I often see the new ones for sale but they're not as pretty now and no longer come with the raised section as you can see below. I do see the vintage ones come up from time to time and they linger a while online, I suppose not as much of a market here for them.

I'd get one if I had more room but I was given a chiminea by my father which I use a lot

The nights are turning chilly here so I broke out the fireplace last night.  I was surprised at how high the chamber is.  The height created plenty of room for stacking logs.  Once the fire got going, we really enjoyed how the heat radiates outward instead of upward, creating a comfortable warm zone all around.  Plenty of air flow so no problem keeping the fire going.  We oohed and aahed at how much better it is than the smokeless Breeo we had a few years ago.  Snuffing it out was a breeze too.  Simply removed the lid and the support structure, then placed the lid on the base.  I think I need more wood.....

I have never been sold on these...
However, your revelations above have changed my mind!
These are rare to find but I will keep an eye out for one now.

Looks so inviting - especially now that it's getting cooler.  Makes me want to get mine out and try it.  I see you have a grate in yours.  Which size did you use?  Instructions I've seen say to put sand in the bottom.  Not sure I'll do that but wonder what the purpose is - maybe to protect the bottom??  Thanks for posting pictures in use....

Good catch!  The grate is 21 inches.  It came with the fireplace.  The guy I bought it from used it so I figured I'd just keep using it.  I think it helps in more ways than one.  Protects the bottom surface, aids in air flow etc.  Sand on the bottom has some benefits also.  Per Google, sand is put in the bottom of a fire pit to act as an insulator, protect the base from extreme heat, and help with even heat distribution and air circulation. It provides a protective layer between the fire and the pit's surface, which can extend the life of the fire pit by preventing direct heat damage, and helps the fire burn more efficiently. Additionally, sand can be used to help extinguish a fire by smothering the flames and is a simple material for leveling the pit floor.
