Ugly drum smoker
« on: November 04, 2021, 11:26:56 AM »
I've been wanting to build one of these for some time and this came up for sale near me. I couldn't pass it up for $10. Good shape, just needs a good burn out and a repaint! Anyone else got a UDS?

No UDS but I have a PBC which I consider an absolute rib machine. Love it but under used… I need to get it back into rotation.

I have the gateway rib hanger for the 18 wsm and I think it performs similarly.

That style of cooking is awesome for ribs.

I built 3 in 2010. Took 6 place ribs at a KCBS event in Wildwood NJ in 2012 using one. People always stopped by our area to check them out. Lots of “bigger” smokers at those events. The UDS works grate. And quess what - all Weber grates used. Just used bolts on the sides. And a home made firebox. Pizza pan on top to hold a water pan.

Since I moved I have been using a WSM 18” they work the same.

You set a pizza pan on top of the firebasket? That seems easier than what I was gonna do

Seeking a Black Sequoia I know I know, I'd settle for just the tabbed no leg grill

I like the stack and handle color.  I’ll bet that’s fun to cook on!

I like it, nice refurb!

Now that you've seasoned your UDS. What's your first cook going to be?

I'm going to be smoking 2 pork butts and some chuck roasts for my sons birthday party in a few weeks. I'm excited to use it!

That's actually what I learned to smoke on. Someone donated one to our firehouse years ago.
It's seen here when it was a little worse for wear after being neglected.

First big cook on the uds went well! It took a little bit for me to figure out the vent adjustments with that much meat on it, but once I had it dialed in it held between 250 and 275 for about 9.5 hours. Not as many people were going to make it to the party as we first thought so I ended up only doing 1 butt and 2 chuck roasts for about 15.5 lbs. Meat was extremely juicy with great flavor. Overall I'd say it was a success!
