Red Outrider -- or at least half of one
« on: June 26, 2021, 11:00:17 AM »
A few weeks ago, I was on FB Marketplace, and did a deeper-than-usual dive.  Lots of scrolling.  For some reason, an ad entitled “Weber Smokey Joe” in Hockessin DE catches my eye.

Is that color-matching bag of Match Light playing tricks on me or is that a red outrider bowl hiding under a black lid?  I pull up the ad to see if there are other pictures, but the only other pictures show the cruddy insides.

The ad had been up for a couple of weeks, so I messaged the seller with the standard “is this still available?”  A short time later, she responds “Yes it is.”  As much as I’d love even half of a red outrider, I don’t want to take a 200+ mile round trip without target confirmation.  So I ask if she has any other pictures.  Radio silence.  I bookmark the ad and move along.

Two weeks later, the ad’s still up, but with an extra description -- “Red bottom, black replacement lid.”  So I message again on a Friday saying I can come pick it up either day of the weekend.  Radio silence.

Tuesday of this week, the seller responds and apologizes for missing my last message. She wasn’t willing to ship, so I decided to take an early Saturday morning trip to Delaware to pick up what I believe to be a red bowl / black lid outrider that I’ve only seen hiding behind a bag of Match Light.

Totally worth it.  She cleaned up real nice.  The only real damage is chipping around the leg holes.  No idea of the age of the bowl.  The black lid is EE and has the hook from a regular 18, but it does have the outrider wood handle.

And with a Zavod handle:

The Zav handle really makes a difference, right?

Did you ask if she still had the original lid?

Yep.  It was long gone.   :(
