1990 Red head M code
« on: November 10, 2020, 05:33:14 PM »
So picked this up for $15. She's got a few freckles and pops. More like a red headed step child lol. The big issue I'm having is the ash sweep assembly is stuck like the fur on my face! I drilled all the way through and it still won't budge. Anyone have any ideas? I'm going to try some vinegar next. You may notice a big dent in the lid as well, any advice on that too would be appreciated! Thanks. I know many of you have done several of these Rescue and Restores and I'm grateful for the hand holding!

The ash catcher needs some love too, twisted it back to shape as best I could. I'm still new to the restore movement so any advice is welcomed!

Looks good. Cut off the rod on both sides of the nut and the whole thing will fall through :)

Also for dents i like to use a rubber mallet and do some gentle hits from the inside. I’ve heard of people using a softball but I’ve never tried it

Grab your grinder and grind the sweep handle off on each side of the nut, tap the nut with a hammer and it will fall thru.
I enjoy saving these old sweeps and use a good rust penatrant oil, pliers and a propane torch. Soak the sweep nut in the oil for about three days and try to turn the screw with the pliers if won't budge time to pull out the torch. The turns have got to be miniscule back and forth or the screw will break off. Soak all parts in evapo-rust for that brand new look. Good luck next time.

Glad you got it. They were not responding to me after changing the price. In my town too. I am glad you got it so that it will have a long life. Good luck with the restore. Hope to see it at a future get together!

Finally got it off. Thanks for all the help! I definitely know what not to do next time. Did some damage to the enamel twisting on it so much. The rust was so set, I thought someone had welded the ash sweep components together!
