Wood Dale Score
« on: July 14, 2020, 08:13:59 AM »
Just picked up this grill this weekend. Previous owner says it was originally black, and appears to be from 1962/1963. Looks pretty grey all around except for underneath the lip of the bottom bowl.

Awesome find!

I would vote faded black on yours, usually if they get darker when wet it's faded. Hit it with some cooking oil and see if it shines gray or goes black.

Eitherway awesome woodale!

Wow, nice Wood Dale!  I have one about 10 years newer and it looks just about like that (finish wise).  Originally black for sure on yours.

This Wood Dale needed it's own thread so I split the topic from the Faded Grey thread.

@Brianmc86  - Welcome to the Forum. That's the way to make an entry post.   Was this the Wood Dale listed on FB Marketplace in Oxnard, California?

@Red_5_Wrangler - Thanks for the tip! I need to work on removing some rust spots on the legs, bottom crate and wheels so hopefully I can get to it this weekend and take pictures after it gets a bath.

@bamakettles - This was my first kettle purchase so I definitely want to make sure it lasts another 60 years. Good to know it's in decent shape. Now I just need a cover...

@Cellar2ful - Haha yes indeed this is the one! That's funny you knew about this- I believe the post was up for only 1 day. Anyways, thanks for the greeting. Looking forward to contributing more to this forum in the future!

@Brianmc86 Congrats!  I saw this Oxnard Wood Dale on CL as well.  I was shocked that it had been up 15 hours when I saw it.  What a great looking first kettle.  Welcome to the Wood Dale club!

I believe the ash pan that came with this grill is original, but it's missing the clips that hold the pan in place. Instead, there are wires that have been used to hold the pan up, but obviously it's not ideal. Does anyone know how I can get my hands on the clips needed for this ash pan?

That is indeed an original U cut out ash pan with attached J hooks. It is period correct for a Wood Dale kettle. I only know of one member that had a couple of J hooks made.  He had old school blacksmith living near him that fashioned some for him.  If you know any metal fabricators, they would be able to make you one.  I assume your somewhere in Southern California.  Try some custom Hot Rod builders in your area.  I know you have plenty of them in So Cal.

Here is a thread on my 62 Ambassador.  It has photos and some tips you might find helpful on restoring the legs, wheels and triangle.

Grate score, and great seller Roza was. She let me know someone was coming in the AM and would let me know if they didn't arrive. Looks like a stunning grill and the best I have seen for $65 in awhile. Grill on
