Question For the guys that know Gas Grills

Last summer I picked up a few Genesis Silver B's in my area. They were free for different reasons. I broke them all down and rebuilt one out of all the good part. The only new part I used were the flavorizer bars and an ignitor. I have not use it much since I built it. I don't do a lot on gas and really am only learning the grill. This thing runs hot! In 5 minutes it will peg the thermometer @650-700 degrees F. Today I replaced the regulator and it still runs hot! Burners have a little more yellow than I think they should, but I don't think that would cause this kind of overheating. Any thoughts from the gasser crowd? Thank for your help!

@Kneab , Good question! I thought they were, but was the only thing I don't know. Would that make it overheat?

The orifices in a natural gas grill are noticeably larger than the ones in a Lp grill. If you have more than one set of valves you may want to compare them. Also you can test your thermometer in boiling water to see if it is accurate.

I passed all the left over parts to Bob bq. I am also using an oven thermometer on the grate and its the same.

Easy one if you can remember, did the manifold you are running come with a long ass hose 6-8 foot long attached or a short 3 foot hose? You could have used a manifold from a ng with the hose from a lp

I don't know if all of the grills even had hoses, but I do remember all had tank hangers. I really don't know what else I could try other than find a different manifold!

Not sure there is anything wrong with it.  I have a Silver C and a 1000, the 1000 full on using the Weber therm gets to about 550 that obviously is not at grate level which would be hotter.  The C runs at that 650-675 range again using the Weber therm. 

If you had tank hangers on those grills they most likely unless somebody swapped the manifold are fine.  With a nat gas manifold hooked to propane there will be little difference from low to medium on the burners and yes they will run hotter on high.

On my 1000 when I start my grill to get it to temp to clean the grates I put it on high but on the C I usually do a bit more than medium as it comes up to temp a lot faster and runs hotter.  A little orange flame should not be an issue.

On the 1000 your heating 13 bars on the C just 5 which my theory has always been the C will run hotter less mass to heat but no engineer.

I prefer for steaks the C as it seems to do a better job on the sear but you do have to dial in the temps.

One other thing if you wanted to check the orifice size in your manifold, if you have a scrap piece of 16 gauge wire it will fit in a natural gas orifice it will not fit in a propane orifice only 18 gauge will.

Don't worry about the grate temp on a gasser IMO, I replaced both therms in the 1000 and Silver C, I use the Weber therm at about 450 maybe higher as my guide when doing steaks.  I also don't use the back burner providing you aren't needing that amount of space I just use the front and middle with the back off.  I am a believer in learn your grill with the temps on the Weber Therm same on my performer as I use neither for smoking ribs or such as I have a UDS smoker for those things.  I really don't think you have a problem with what you are describing if the Weber therms are good.  The trick with the C or B no matter is on your pre cook burnoff don't turn all burners on high if you get to 500 degrees on the Weber Therm that is enough, turning all the valves to high going to run it to 650 and with the C unlike the 1000 heats up way faster and cools down to normal cooking temps slower. 

Good luck and by the way the grill temp from the grate to the stem on the Weber therm can be as much as 50 degrees off or more so my 450 for example on the therm maybe 500 at grate level.

This might be an easy way to check.   Turn the grill on, then dial the burners down to low.  Flames should be very small and close to the burner tube.   If not, you have a NG manifold.

Finally got around to solving the problem with the Gen B. Got a different manifold from @Bob BQ . Thanks Bob! Works great now. Much better control of the temperature.
