If you let the ‘modified’ HD pan simply sit in the bowl would there be enough room under the pan for airflow?  If yes, then I think you are simply looking at finding a way to leak proof the modified pan.

The more I think about it, if you're looking for a DIY project, then I would go with the modified aluminum water heater pan for $44 with some cutting and folding. This way, you get the satisfaction of having done it yourself and for only $44. I think by working with the aluminum, you'll be surprised at how nice it turns out.
Wife: Let me guess... you want to grill again

If you can weld mild steel, you can make a pan to your exact desire. This is a diffuser that I made for my 26er. You can do similar to make a pan for your ranch kettle:

@robert-r

That is a pretty awesome set up you have created.  If I had my choice I would certainly do something similar or modified to what you have created.  I would prefer to use stainless steel or aluminum if possible, but having welding equipment is the challenge.  I have my father-in-law who is a farmer and has some welding equipment but most of his stuff is set up for fixing regular steel for minor equipment repairs.  I asked him about SS and he really didn't seem thrilled as the metal can be harder to cut and he would need some different welding sticks and/or gas.  I haven't asked him about aluminum so it might be the next best thing assuming he isn't annoyed with me wanting him to do grilling projects. :p  In my defense he always asks me to do any tech or software project he needs.  ;)

In an ideal world I would make several drip trays for my ranch that would be removable in pieces in order to accommodate different types of cooks.  Probably the best work I have seen for a Ranch drip tray has been from @Hogsy

He has also done a pretty awesome charcoal basket for a ranch made out of a leftover 22.  I admit that I have a black performer kettle that I am currently eyeing for that project.

And if I am going to continue to brag for him, he had this roti monster made...

Too bad he is half a world away, I could just borrow his stuff!  ;D

I always run into the same problem of not having a welder handy or trying to find someone. Not anymore!  I’m making some upgrades to the shop
