Poor man's Vortex
« on: September 29, 2019, 03:02:23 PM »

Made a vortex for under $5. Get one of these from HD

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Leaktite-5-qt-Metal-Pail-5-QT-METAL-PAIL/202264022

Used a can opened to remove the bottom of the pail, then used metal shears to cut it to proper height so it will fit between the grates and presto, $5 vortex. It works great, temperatures reached over 500F!

That's a galvanized bucket, I'm no expert and don't know what one must do to make it safe for the grill. To play it safe I would stay away from anything galvanized and cooking.

Baskets in the middle get just as hot as vortex or poor Tex.  The conical shape lends itself to various cooking arrangements. But I commend the effort. It’s always fun making something useful. As another member posted, be careful using anything galvanized.

Stainless steel mixing bowls and pots from a thrift shop or Goodwill are a safer alternative for building a poortex.

My poortex started off as a Stainless steel candy making pot.

I used a stainless steel bowl I got for 25 cents at a garage sale. I have a few back ups if this one rusts out

how do you cut the bowls so they give you that conical shape? and what did you do to smooth it out so you don't cut yourself with use?

A mixing bowl has a pretty good curve to it, so does a candy bowl.
I think that I cut the bottom of mine out with a jig saw.
Then use a curved file or a dremel to break the sharp edges.

Never use galvanized anything for cooking!

Solution: Just buy the real deal. Not that expensive, and will last a very long time. Just sayin'...
Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.

Sorry for my stupidity. But I can’t figure out how to use this in grilling/cooking.
Maybe some kind person tell me and maybe give a link to the original of this thing.
