Grill area visitor
« on: September 10, 2019, 07:15:21 AM »
Nearly walked right into this last night!   Spidey had spun his web from my outdoor heater to an 18 inch kettle nearby.   Not sure what type it is.   It was larger than a quarter.   Left him alone.  He was having a good bug dinner.

Looks more like a cicada. Saw a cicada killer go to town on one years ago, big and mean and can put a hurting on you.

Definitely cicada, aka locust, not to be confused with locust, aka grasshopper.

Cicada for sure, but with the close up wing span and high resolution, it might as well have been an owl!

These guys are the worst fliers on earth -- like mr. magoo in a helicopter with a faulty tail rotor. I'm surprised he hit the web.

Thanks for the correction, I could have swore these were big ass horse flies around my house. The web was pretty big, I should have snapped a pic of it before it caught the bug.

If your kids like catching bugs, cicadas are perfect because they have no mouths or stingers. They're huge, slow and totally harmless.

You gotta watch for those suckers tho. Shouldn’t hurt tho.

You have to worry more about cicada killer wasps if anything. We have them
Here in parts of Canada as well.
