Slats and Handle Finish
« on: February 22, 2019, 02:12:40 PM »
I'm in the process of refinishing my handle and slats and I want them to look as close to the original condition Weber issued back in the 90's. What has everyone used to achieve this look with the stain/ polyurethane finish?

Not sure about original specs, but I wouldn't use a polyurethane. I use spar marine varnish.  It will hold up much better in the elements.

My recommendation, and personal preference would be use just tung oil to treat the wood. A couple three coats.
I did this with my Genesis Jr restore and really like the look.
I didn't want the handle or the slats to have any type of sheen to it. I figured that would take away from the red lid.

Here is my junior restore thread:

Oh yeah, I really like how that turned out! I searched around but was having a tough time finding information about the finishes used.

Did you use a satin finish or gloss?

@MacEggs

What type of wood did you use for your restore?

@GrillSavage , I used mahogany for the handle along with a plain tung oil to treat it.

The slats are re-purposed cedar and I used a tinted Danish oil to give them some colour.

I did not use any spar varnish or polyurethane after that.
