Simple mod for lump charcoal
« on: September 22, 2018, 01:17:40 PM »
I can't be the only one who uses two crossed charcoal grates to keep tiny lump pieces from falling through when they are still red hot. I don't mind so much when they fall to the bottom of the kettle, but when I have a three zone fire going it drives me nuts.

I started doing this one day after I had a real busted bag of lump and half of it fell through to my ash catcher. Needless to say I could've cooked a ribeye caveman style in the catcher if I wanted.

You aren't the only one. I have this setup in my WSM and one of my kettles.

Yeah the tines on the weber charcoal  grates are too far apart for lump. I purchased 6  aftermarket stainless charcoal grates last year but seems like they're no longer available . The tines are a bit closer so it works very well with lump.

I used to do the two grate setup but it makes my vortex too high and it contacts the coking grate.  I cut a piece of expanded metal  so that it sits just under the normal charcoal grate.  Same effect only more clearance for accessories.

EM? Where can I buy this? What's it called? It looks like a simple and very effective mod.

 @jp217p

EM = expanded metal

I get it for a good price at Metal Supermarkets.
Cut it to size using an angle grinder and a cut-off wheel.
