Genesis 1000 For My Dad
« on: September 14, 2018, 11:56:17 AM »
A couple months ago my folks came for a visit from Wisconsin so I cooked a meal for them on my Genesis 3000. My Dad was watching me cook on it and started telling me how his grill (a few years old BHG Walmart 4 burner) flares up all the time, even on low. I've been trying to get him into charcoal for years but he always says "maybe when I retire". He said his grill is no fun to cook on with the flareups so he doesn't use it much. I showed him the flavorizers on mine and how they do what they do and he was intrigued. So I told him I'd try to find him something affordable on craigslist that he could buy. However, I secretly began formulating a birthday present plan.

I had a good condition 1000 in the boneyard so I got that out. Got really lucky and found a free redhead on craigslist, raced over to pick that up just for the lid. Had all the metal bits sandblasted and then I repainted. I've made pine slats in the past but I wanted something nicer for this build. A buddy had some spare walnut laying around and he was kind enough to rip some slats for me. My wife had a nice idea, burning our family name in the table slats and a little birthday message on the back of the lid handle. I used clear spar varnish to let through the natural beauty of that walnut. Replaced everything internally, manifold, burners, ss rod grates and rcplanebuyer flavorizers.

We'll be making the trip to deliver it to him in a few weeks. Going to bring one of my Dad's favorites, pork steaks. Break it in right!

BRAVO! I have a similar redhead waiting for the same treatment. No diss on the current Genesis II, but these grills are fantastic cookers. The East/West burners are hard to beat for rotisserie cooks. And they are just so damn good looking - your Dad's in particular!

Stunning restoration, on both of them.  That will be a special grill for your Dad for sure.  Your WKC handle makes sense now.

That is so cool and both your grills are stunning. If you don’t mind sharing, how much did it cost to have the frame and firebox media blasted? I wish I could do that on my restorations but have to do it with a wire cup brush on an angle grinder. Works, but not as perfectly and is a very messy undertaking.

Thanks for the nice comments guys!... @Jon Tofte The sandblasting was around $75 at a local shop here in town. For these two I did, it made the process much easier to just start from scratch.

Those look great. Very nice job on the restore.
I love those old style Genesis.
Hard to beat the heat distribution of those with the double flavorizer bar setup.
