Neighbor gave me an old Brinkman electric smoker. I modified it a bit to sit on a little kettle. Made aluminum base gasket, modified the rusted out bottom to work as a better seal for lid, added an exhaust vent, thermometer and top handle. Looks like shit, but works fine.

Also a mod I did for a 22.5

I wish. That's just the lid from the kettle. Used to be a Silver gas grill (wife's) that needed work. Thought it would serve better as a table so I made a top.

My thought is
1: keeps heat and smoke from charcoal directed upward to water pan for better indirect smoking, cooking.
2: Keep coals contained.
3: I've seen some use fire bricks, but mine locks into bottom charcoal grate so it can't tip over and seals to sides better.
Seems to work fine.

Pretty crude, but I made it while coals were getting ready.

Here's mine that I had made for my 26'er. It's made out of SS. Works great. Hogsy made the first that I had seen. Hey Hogsy can you link that thread again? :)

That's nice!  How is air flow?  Do you have trouble keeping the fire at a constant temp?

The air flow actually is great! With the bottom at half damper and the top almost fully closed I can maintain about a 275 temp. I mostly use this set up with my pitmasterIQ for extra long cook.
