What color is this MBH?
« on: April 04, 2018, 12:55:03 PM »
I have a line on this metal bowl handle kettle, but am trying to figure out if it is just a faded black or if it might actually be a grey.

It's kind of far & I'm leaning towards it being a faded black and not a true grey, but am guessing that there are much better experts on here.  Were grey MBH kettles even made?
regards,
Hal

I might go with grey, that would be an almost perfect fade for it to affect down the bottom of the bowl and the leg sockets.  Unless there is issues with the picture in general.

Good point.

I had noticed how MUCH fading there was on the bottom, but hadn't considered uniformity.  I have seen some really faded lids in the Midwest, but it seemed like the kettles themselves didn't get hit quite as hard out here (although that might be different in Cali, AZ & whatnot).

I think it's a faded black.  Pretty sure I can see the tips of bowl vent tabs indicating it is a daisy wheel kettle.   The true grey color kettles were only produced with one touch ash sweeps.

Now it's grey, no matter how it started out. 8)
Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.

It's a MBH (Metal Bowl Handle), which were replaced with wood in '81 and the on-touch didn't come out until '83 (both according to the age guide).

In other words, assuming @Cellar2ful information is correct then it is a just faded black because there would be no true grey kettles prior to 1983 and thus none with metal bowl handles.

True, but an original grey would have been worth the trip.  A faded black, not so much.

Is The Plainsman, produced in the early ‘60s considered a true gray?  @Craig

I run across faded blacks MUCH closer to home all the time.
Plus his is really only half a grill. (No matching lid).
Plus he wants too much money for a used faded black grill (& not even because he thinks it is rare or old).
If it didn't have the modern plastic wheels, I'd go get it.
Or, if it was a grey.

Damn.  Now @Bob BQ, with his picture, is making me wonder if the wheels were replaced.
I might have to take a trip for a look see.
Maybe he'll trade for a faded black with a lid.
If it is a Plainsman, where the heck am I gonna find a lid?
Now, I've got to research Plainsman.

Is that your faded black @Kneab?  It looks darker by the leg sockets.  I'm guessing if I go check it out & turn it upside-down it will be somewhat apparent if it is a faded black.

I'm going with faded black.

Yup it's mine Potsie.
Inside the leg sockets might be black still. I'll have to check when I empty out the kettle storage if it ever warms up here.[emoji30]
