Hey gang...

I have been using Lazzari Mesquite for a long time. Nice large chunks, an easy open bag and a good price make it hard to beat. It's a better deal than Royal Oak from home depot and the local supermarket is a lot closer and easier than the closest big orange box anyway. I am also seeing minimal inclusions (rocks) and good consistency bag to bag.

Get the 40# bag if you can. Cash n Carry has it for $13.50.

They carry it year round for that price.

Monster chunks that I really like. Very easy to break it down to size with a small axe without breaking it to small pieces.

Clearly I am spoiled. I sent Lazzari the video and at least one or two people there saw it. I am working with them to do an onsite video since they are only about a 40 minute drive from here.

I've done a couple Lazzari reviews over the year on the Brethren site. The 40# bags do have much larger chunks than the smaller retail bags. On average I get almost 10# of dust and practically unusable out of a 40# bag.
But all in all Lazzari Mesquite lump is by far better than Frontier or Best of the West.

If you are in the Bay Area you should do yourself a favor and pick up the Oak lump!

Just wish they sell the oak in my area. Mesquite flavor tend to overpower milder foods.  More suited for red meats on high heat.  Never used it for smoking. I use RO lump for smoking and for  other cooks.
You tend to have a lot  of dust and very tiny pieces  when you happen to get the bags at the bottom of the pallet. I usually stock up when the pallets are still full since they are less likely to have been smashed from the weight of the bags on top.

I am going to pay them a visit here in the near future and pick up some of their oak lump and some of their briquettes. I don't know where to buy these products locally aside from direct. All they have in the supermarket is the Mesquite.

Edit: Agreed. I don't use it for smoking either. Just medium and high heat cooks. It's just easier to use briquettes for low and slow. I use mesquite with salmon but not any other fish. Also with spicy chicken, usually a Mexican style recipe. Use it with beef all the time too.

Mesquite lump is only overpowering if it's not burning clean

Agreed. Once the flame dies down and you just have the glowing charcoal, there is not as much smoke and smell coming off.
