Summit charcoal LP question
« on: January 20, 2018, 11:37:45 AM »
Hi all,

Setting up a new Summit charcoal and ran into an issue with installing the LP tank.  I'm using one of the 16oz Coleman camping tanks.  The width of the tank is apparently an issue because it is hitting on the gas hose attachment shown below.  I can't get the tank screwed onto the regulator without fear of cross threading.

Is there a recommendation for the proper LP tank?  The Weber owner document says that it should work with the 16oz tanks.

You should be find if its only nudging the hose out of the way... otherwise look for the tall and slender Benz-o-matic propane cylinders and it will install with no rubbing [emoji106]

Thanks!  I was hoping that the Coleman would work, at least based on the instructions.  Guess I'll pick up the Benzomatic for now.

I wasn't aware of the option to run a full sized tank.  Will need to research that mod.

Some more details for you here:

http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/summit-charcoal-mods/msg307215/#msg307215

This is what the mod looks like:

Parts list:

- 3/8 FLARE to 1/8 FPT Female Pipe Thread Brass Fitting (screws onto where the stock reg is removed and allows you to connect a "standard" LP reg for use with the full size tanks)
- Propane LP hose WITH reg +/- 20" length
- Teflon tape for gas (yellow)
- A bigger LP tank!

more or less you delete the stock reg and install a direct hose that has a new reg located down at the bottle connection.

Good luck!

Just skip using gas assist. Buy lighter cubes.

That's what I'm doing for the time being.  I have a chimney starter that works fine.  I just had an extra gas tank laying around.  I have a Benzomatic torch for searing sous vide meats as well as.  That is a good starter too.  [emoji5]

@jsk0703 - Have you tried rotating the lower bowl? Since it is just floating on the stand, you should be able to rotate it a small about thus moving the burner tube with it to give you clearance. Let me know if that works out!

Cheers!

Thanks Mike!  I will look into it.  I didn't even think to try that.
