I remember you asking about powder coating the grill but had no idea what to expect. Damn. Looks amazing.

Man, that is a show piece... be a shame to get that gem dirty!

What an awesome kettle Rub!! You guys did an amazing job!

I love how clean the layup is - Splitting the leg socket, stars and stripes look flawless, top bowl edge is solid red etc etc - very nicely done!!

Do you have a max temp rating for the coating? And any luck with a heat shield setup?... would a SnS backed away from the edge a bit work? Either way be super careful :o

Thanks guys I appreciate it. I can't claim the design, but it's one I've loved for years. I showed it to my friend and we talked it over for a while and he assured me he could do it. He builds and sells his own line of drum smokers which he also powder coats. They hold up real well with smoking temps. And there's several inches of airspace between his charcoal basket and the side of the can, which really dissipates the heat. He tells me my coating should be good up to 400-500°. I've been checking my kettles lately when grilling with an infrared thermometer I have to get an idea of normal exterior surface temps. My setup was a SnS, pulled off the edge of patent # red kettle to protect the porcelain. I use lump charcoal. The lid temps are never an issue, almost always less than 300°. On the side with the SnS, charcoal grate level, is always the hottest. I've temped it up to 525° or so. I think all we'd need to do is have something similar to a large upside down vortex, lifted off the charcoal grate an inch or so. With 2" of airspace from the sides of the kettle I think that would about do it. Prototypes to come.

All that said, I don't think I'd ever cook in this one. She's gonna stay a looker. But my buddy would like to figure it all out and tap into the kettle powder coat market. He can do lids now with logos, names, etc.

BTW with all the talk about the LE Red leg sockets, I had to look and see how he did on mine. It's a keeper ;)
