+1 for wires between bowl and lid, when I use a thermometer. Which is pretty much only for pork butts these days.

I slotted my wsm. Didn't seem to weaken anything and makes it easy to add or remove probes at any time during a cook. Then you aren't fiddling with hot grates to route a probe through a port or to retrieve a probe that has fallen through the grates.

G' Day Mkrause,

Any chance of a photo of it?

Cheers.

Sure do!
I used a cut-off wheel to slot it, a small drill bit to round out the bottom, and a small file to clean up the edges.

You're welcome. Little advice... take a little at a time just until you can move the probe wires freely with the lid on. The wheel goes through like a hot knife through butter so it's easy to go too far.

Do you need to slot it? Could you just take a grinding wheel and grind a notch in the lid and leave it connected above? I added a picture, just notch up to the red line and leave the material above it intact?

Between bowl and lid. My experience is that the wires last for at least 4 years when doing it like this.

i would be careful with the 'between the bowl and lid' advice. Some kettles fit snug enough to damage probe wires, while other kettles fit loose enough to not.

I have seen.. from the grills I have had here in Europe .. the older grills have tighter fitting lids.  I have one '96 18" that fits so tight that with out the grates the lid will pick the whole grill off of the ground. No way in hell you would ever get a probe in between it.
New grills .. that's another story. There is so much play in the lids that you could fly a Boeing 747 in the gap.
For this reason I never clean the lip or sealing edge on a new kettle.
As far as cutting a slot in a grill.. I would not do it to the grills I have only because I don't want to risk rust or damage.
If I had a cheap used dedicated smoker then maybe.. but I don't have it now.

Install a ss threaded nipple in the side of the bowl. Cap it off with a threaded plug when probes are not being used.

Here was my solution with a threaded lamp tube/nuts and a galvanized cap.  All material was easy to get from the big box store.  I cut a hole above the grate.  Just plan out location around the kettle that works best based on your cooks.   I would place it closer to the handle on my MT I use with the SNS.

Also added a spot as a holder for the cap when in use

I'm about to mod my performer as well. I may try the rubber grommet from a Smokey mountain to see how that works. The threaded fitting mod on my master touch works great however.
