Best place to run the probes into a kettle ?

Hi All,

Novice question.
Where is the best place to insert the temperature probes into a Weber kettle.
Through the top vent holes (probably a hassle taking the lid off and on).
Just run them on top of the bowl and under the lid.
Drill a hole in the bowl.
Or cut a slot near the top of the bowl so lid fits over them.
When I get my kettle I don't want to stuff it up ;D

I put them between the bowl and lid. Just put the lid down gently and you shouldn't have a problem.

I have been putting mine between the bowl and lid. I've seen people cutting the edge of the lid. I'm sure this would weaken it over time.
I just ordered me some probe ports where you drill a hole into the side of the bowl. I haven't fill it yet but am about to soon.

I slotted my wsm. Didn't seem to weaken anything and makes it easy to add or remove probes at any time during a cook. Then you aren't fiddling with hot grates to route a probe through a port or to retrieve a probe that has fallen through the grates.

I just run mine between the lid and bowl. I am just careful / gentle when putting the lid on.

I don't run cables anymore. I use my Thermapen for meat temp, and after years of kettling, I just know where the vents should be set. Butt, I do stick a probe (old Maverick 73) in the top vent for a chamber temp check.
Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.

For low n slow cooks, I have run the probe through the bottom vents .. away from the lit charcoal.

I haven't used my Maverick in a few cooks now. I will with brisket just so I'm not too hot but with everything else the oven thermometer on the grate has been great.

I thought the idea of the temp probes was so that you didn't have to keep lifting the lid to monitor.
If you lift the lid doesn't that bugger up your stable cooking temperature ?

So maybe I would be better to just check how accurate the lid temperature gauge is ( and use that as a guide to cooking temp)
Then after a while quickly open lid whack the thermapen in to check (internal meat temp).
