Grommet Options
« on: August 11, 2017, 09:33:50 AM »
I've long been a fan of the Cajun Bandit probe grommets, but the Thermoworks SMOKE probes don't fit...

I'm looking for options, and I'd like to document all of the options along the way.

I'd love to come up with a "best" option and support it with alternatives

What are the options?
@fedex - can you share your big red capped grommet info?

I like the Weber grommet. I will say that if you're installing it on a kettle or WSM that didn't originally have it, it can be a bit daunting drilling a hole that large.

Do they sell them? I liked the look/feel of the ones on the newer WSMs - that's the one right?

I think you can get them at ereplacements, grillparts.com, and maybe Weber...? as well.

Lol I AM a fan of the slot... but i guess nobody else around here is... lots of things i could say about a small slot vs. a big hole but now it would seem much too graphic

To be clear, this thread is dual spirited.

I'm looking for multiple grommet solutions for myself.
But I plan to fully document every option for the good of the club.

I am also really interested I have a smoke and love it. I almost always use it on my 26. It would be nice to have a usable slot for the probes. I will keep myself in tune to this one

Here are some picts I posted on an earlier post today but apply here as well.   Very simple on my newer MT kettle but I am not sure if this is the best way to go on a WSM.  I also do not have a Smoke so not sure about those probes with this mod.

It is very easy after you get over the fear/pain of drilling into your Weber.  I stole this from some BBQ forum and I am sure it is not unfamiliar to some of you.   Best is these parts were inexpensive and all available at Menards last year.   I wish I had thought to document part #'s and the process with some picts.

Lamp tube and nuts were part of a lighting repair kit.  Maybe a kit with various tube lengths and then another with the nuts.   The cap is galvanized and from the plumbing dept and matched the threads.  I added a second to the ash bowl frame as a storage spot after I misplaced the cap a couple times.   Pilot hole and step bit to cut the holes.

After using this set up with my Maverick and iGrill I have had no problems fitting 3 probes through but the iGrill need to go first as the bend is a tight fit.  Maybe a little shorter on the tube.  Also I would recommend maybe a little higher and closer to the handle or behind the handle.   I use a SNS set to the left side of the grill to keep the probes on the indirect side to the right.   The threads on the inside are minimal so as not to cause clearance issues with the grate.

Love to hear what others do.
