Can I add unlit coals to baskets indefinitely?
« on: April 27, 2017, 04:18:08 PM »
I'm thinking about getting those side baskets instead of using the snake meathod. I'm thinking it might be easier to split a chimney of coals, set my vents, and just add a handfull of unlit coals to each basket every 2 hours or so until the cook is done.

The problem I'm having with the snake is that it really locks in around 225-250...sounds perfect but my ribs yesterday took 7+ hours with 2 hours wrapped.

I'd like to try 275 for 5-6 hours or even 350 for chicken.

My snakes even with vents open don't seem to want to get that hot.

Using side baskets or coals banked along the side is a proven cooking method.  Many different ways to get it done with a kettle.

Yeah no rules. Make it your own. Try dumping a full lit chimney banked on one side. Ribs on the other. 2 hours done

Hahaha.... I probably won't go for 2 hour ribs but honestly I should have gone 8 hours with the temps I could get yesterday and a "little" more fire power would be nice.

Sure..no problems. You can also flip the cookin grate upside down to give you super easy access to the baskets.

Just let them hang open....very nice! I'll only have the lid off for 20 seconds.  8)

Depends on what unlit coals you're using,

I have no issue adding unlit Stubbs to any cook. Try the baskets but it sounds like you need to start with more lit coals and be sure to let them ash over before dumping out of the chimney.

If you need higher temps with a snake, open vents more or add more to the snake. Take a page out of @1buckie page and add some small lump pieces to the snake. Hot and fast ribs are damn good also. Yes, maybe a little less tender, but damn good non the less.

You could also make an XL coal basket if you don't want to bank your coals. http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/a-bigger-better-basket-case/

I have a thread around here somewhere that shows how I added 2 baskets together to use instead of making a snake, it is not bigger it is longer and does a 90 to fit around the edge

I have been using it for over 2 years now and find that it works better than I could ever have dreamed it would

I bought 2 baskets and went to town

I can do a 6 hour cook at 225 to 250 without a refill, I simply fill the baskets, except the end, dump in 9 lit coals and go for it, I set the bottom vent to where I have the slider marked and use the top vent to adjust

for some reason this site will not display my flickr images

If we were meant to grill with gas then the garden of Eden would have had a pipeline
