Walmart Brisket?
« on: April 19, 2017, 02:19:36 PM »
I am wanting to do a Brisket this w/e.  Has anyone tried the brisket at Walmart?  I see some that are "choice".  Should I risk it?

Absolutely. If you can find a choice grade brisket, make sure the Cryovac is properly sealed. Also, pick it up and bend it. It should feel very flexible and loose. Look at the tip of the flat and see if there is one that is thicker or more uniform which will help your cooking tenderness

usda choice grade is still good quality stuff.  I'd try it out.  I have not bought any meat from Walmart here in Canada, but my mind set is changing after hearing good things about good quality meats from Walmart thru. friends and family members.

I cooked many walmart briskets and they've all been great.
Looking for colored 18's and SJ's.

Nothing wrong with the walmart briskets. Hell, they "used" to be a cheap cut that no one wanted until everybody learned how to cook them.

@JDann24 , I am using a Kettle. It has been a long time since I attempted a brisket...the last one came out perfect (dumb luck, really)....Used Modified Minion....This time I am doing the snake ring...I hope I can duplicate the success.

Good luck!
I always use Walmart briskets, because the price is right, even better than Sam's if I recall

It was a 13+ hour effort....the 2x2 snake lasted 8.5 hrs, then I added charcoal hourly.... there was a double stall, and I pulled when the brisket hit 203....in light of the double stall, it was a little too late, resulting in a slightly overcooked brisket (mostly on the point)...but not catastrophic...it sat in the cooler wrapped for 4 hours before we ate it....overall, it was a tasty effort and I will definitely do again, having learned from this one....nothing beats experience, as my brother will say.  there was no issue with the quality of the brisket from Walmart, only my inexperience at briskets...

just before pulling at 203

slightly overdone, but quite tasty....even the leftovers were delish
