Try removing the GBS center insert so you don't risk damaging it from the high heat concentrated in one area.
YES! Not as big of a deal with baskets, but if you end up with a vortex you definitely want to remove the center grate for cooks where you aren't actually cooking on that section. A fully loaded medium vortex gets really damn hot right above it and isn't the easiest on grates!
