Can't find a grate. Help please
« on: April 01, 2013, 04:53:09 PM »
Hey Guys, I have a 1996 26er and the food grate and charcoal grate is on their last legs.  Called a few online places and Weber but nobody carries these.  The actual Dia. of the Food grate is 24".  Thanks for any help.

Is that the older style 26? Weber no longer makes grates for it. I suppose you already know that. The grates for the new 26 won't fit. I know for certain the charcoal grate won't fit. I used some expanded metal for the charcoal grate in mine and take real good care of the food grate. I wash it off and oil it after every cook to prevent rust. I think Brian (zavod44) mentioned something about a CI grate that fit but you'll have to get the details from him.

Kamado Joe makes a 24" heavy duty stainless steel grate.  I believe it's exactly 24 inches in diameter.

I think char broil makes it.  I got mine at ace....it was like $24, and it fits perfect, also the Craycort will fit in there.  It sits a little high but you can use it for sure.  I have one and it works fine...

That Kamado Joe grill is the one for their Big Joe and it is a mother! The individual bars look almost like they're the size of drinking straws and they have the hinged sections on each side for adding coals and they're stainless steel to boot. Can't be cheap though

When did Weber stop making the 26er, and when did they start up again? Aren't they both 26.75 across?

They are the same size, but they are different.  The bottom grate and the charcoal grate do not fit properly on each grill.  The new and old are not compatible with each other.

....I'm sorry I misspoke earlier, the company who makes the replacement grate for the old 26ers is called Grillmark.  Here is a link

It looks like the brackets that hold the cooking grate and charcoal grates inside the bowl are welded at different places.  The older 26 cooking and charcoal grates sit lower in the bowl than the newer 26.

Not sure about production dates, but somebody here is sure to know the answer.

I haven;t seen a charcoal grate, but you can make one or even cover your old one with expanded metal.

Grillmark at Amazon Be sure to read the comments for sizing.

Thanks, I'll check out the Kamado Joe website.  And I'm sure that won't cheap.  Would love the Craycort CI but way to much $$$ and $30 for shipping.  I also thought about expanded steel and that may be where I'm heading.
