I wonder if that's moss or something growing on it.  They only came in black and red.

@Jeff   Pretty sure it is moss.  Here is a larger image and you can see rust and bare metal in parts of the kettle.  I think I remember the guy who posted this saying it had been sitting out in his yard or field for over 20 years.  Looks like the lid had been in a different position (about 1/4 turn clockwise) all that time.

I am pretty sure someone on here picked that up. I thought I remember getting a PM about it..

It hardly seems like the vent is necessary with the way the grates sit in it.

What is interesting is that there is no lid vent on the green moldy one in the photo I posted.  If you look at the bowl, I think that bowl vent above the cooking grate is suppose to be the exhaust vent.  Now the lid in @harris92 photo has a lid vent.  What does the one that Weber has on display look like? No lid vent or does it have a lid vent?

I found several images on the Net and they all seem to not have a lid vent.

But there are two vents under the charcoal grate. You can see them in the bowl of the moss covered one. Now it makes more sense to me if you were using for "covered cooking". You can also see the bottom vents on pictures of one in the grill gallery.

Like I said, there's a Fireplace in our Gallery.  That's where that pic on the web came from.  Enjoy

Now that I look closer you can see the silver on the bottom of harris92's grill.

Love the outrider.

Thank you,

It's my favorite kettle to look at; the tough weathered exterior, the robust legs, and that beautiful Zav handle to top it off.... I need to cook with it again, soon!

Congratulations on the nice collection of kettles.

Thanks,

I may have to thin down the herd a bit, I am expecting to move in the near future and add in the RedHead SSP and I have too many things to be moving.
