Vortex for Yakitori & Yakiniku
« on: December 28, 2015, 07:15:52 PM »
Last night, my girlfriend and I tried yakitori (chicken legs) and yakiniku (sirloin steak) using our Weber Performer and Vortex.

Chicken legs (5) ran us about $3.50 and the steak was around $4.00 at our local Publix.

I used Weber Style skewers and two fire bricks to set up our cook.  I turned the Vortex wide side up and about 3/4 full of Royal Oak lump charcoal.  I turned the skewers 1/4 turn every 5 mins until I got the color I was looking for and finished them off with KC Masterpiece teriyaki sauce.

Total amount of time from start-to-finish was about an hour and that included food prep and lighting the fire.

when I lived in Georgia, I used to love going to this little Japanese place that served yakiniku. it was awesome. when I moved to texas, I went to more Japanese joints than I can remember. only one even knew what I was talking about, although they didn't serve it. so, it's been years since I had any and yours looks great. I have found a reasonable approximation at Ghengis Grill(Mongolian grill place where you pick what you want and thy cook it up) using their sliced beef and steamed rice with equal parts sambal oelek and honey soy sauces. it's not the same, but it's the closest I've managed to find in almost 15yrs.

Great use of the Vortex !!!   The skewers look fantastic.   Would go really well with BBQ'd Pork fried rice and stir-fried Broccoli.  Course then you might need another kettle or two :)                       SJ
