Jumbo Joe mods
« on: May 25, 2015, 01:51:51 PM »
I just purchased an 18" Jumbo Joe for picnics with the family but am finding it perfect for everyday use too. I've been googling for the various mods, and have found some which I will be doing.

I am specifically looking to see if anyone has ungraded their Jumbo Joe ash catcher plate to an ash catcher "removable bowl" type that they have on the full size 22" performers etc. ?

I'm thinking a big coffee can with holes drilled might work too.

Wanting to have a bit safer ash catcher solution.

Thanks
Corey

Hi Corey and welcome to the WKC. I don't think I've seen any that are enclosed as you envision but some of us have placed 8" pie plates down under, either regular or foiled (or both). Should be plenty safe.

The closest thing to what you have in mind would be an older One Touch Gold 18.5" grill with cut-down legs. http://weberkettleclub.com/blog/2015/04/10/mini-weber-mod-midget-otg/

Don't quite know the spacing underneath as I don't have one, but maybe adding an 18.5" Gold ash cannister may be workable?

Here's a few items from people ho have them.....they may also have some ideas.....

One from Weber Bullet, different approach, but looks like it might fit?

This is the thing from "Mods Month" and has a few shots of things in there.....

The biggest problem it seems like where the legs attach, there's not a lot of room to work with......

Are the legs fitted like this one?

That's grate Old Dave !!!!!

I knew I'd seen several good setups of yours, but to have them all in one place like that really is sweet.....

Any outside the box thoughts on an ash enclosure for the model?

What about a cut down coffee can with holes punched in the top end, with a slot in one section with a bolt attached to the vent on the bottom.  Think OTG ash ring bucket combined sitting on the ash pan.

@Old Dave - I read your info on your blog (great blog btw) and was looking for the handle you used on the bottom vent.
"I found a problem on my very first cook...the tabs used for adjusting the intake and exhaust vents are very hot and difficult to use. I purchased a large black plastic knob from a grill replacement company and installed in on the lower intake vent. "

I've done some searching and can't find anything close to that.  If you remember that would be helpful.  I had some thoughts in doing similar what @addicted-to-smoke did but I like yours better.... Any guidance you can give would be appreciated.

The knob came from Clagrills.com and cost $6.39. I also uses a short piece of 1/4-20 threaded rod for the knob.
