I think the only difference was that the JJ had wood handles and the SJP had plastic.

My red JJ would not accept a regular 18.5" cooking grate.  The regular one had a slightly smaller diameter.  The one for the JJ is slightly larger to fit in that lip in the bowl.

You saw new ones with no lid lock?  How did they hole the side vents on.  I would say if you saw some used ones with no lid bale that they were just lost and someone screwed the vents on with nuts and bolts because they were too dumb to figure out how to build it....

That's a possibility, but I had two like that. Used of course. You might be right except I have heard of this several times before. I think they may have made a few that way. One of the I recall buying was pristine and barely touched.  :-\

The first one I got was missing, But it still had the holes for the bale.  Are there JJ's with no holes for the lid bale?

On the side dampers the lid lock inserts into them to hold them in place. On the bale in the back it inserts in the same place as the back leg. No extra holes. The model I am speaking of doesn't include the bale to hold the lid that the bale clips into. It also doesn't come with the lid lock. I hope this makes sense, because I am getting confused myself. ::)
