Made a Mini today.
« on: April 24, 2015, 03:23:57 PM »
Fun project and so far a rock solid performer.  Holding steady between 250-270 for the last 3 hours.  I was just going to load it up and let it run but I decided to break it in since there were no issues.  Chicken Wings.

Thanks for looking.

I love it! I am definitely doing this soon.
Where did you get your pot?

What, if anything, are you using for a charcoal ring and diffuser?

Hey @jcnaz , this is sweet!!  Got the pot from Walmart.  $19.99 on sale now.  Had it shipped to my nearest FedEx for free shipping.  Thermometer on sale on Amazon $8.99 and it's only 6 deg higher than my Maverick.  No charcoal ring yet just put a full mini chimney unlit.  No disfuser.  Not sure you need one.  I do have an older chargriller water bowl that fits perfect.  Used standard Kingsford.

Here is the temp after 5 1/2 hours.

Right on! I built mine a couple weeks ago with the IMUSA pot from Walmart. I've done 2 cooks and like it so far. I'm sure you will too. My build was posted here too.

Oh, the vasconia pots are on sale if your looking to build a mini. I ordered one to build one for my dad.  There's another post with the link

I'm thinking of turning my smokey joe silver into a WSM as well. Did you put something over the vent holes at the bottom to keep them from getting clogged? Or have you found it not to be an issue?

Tom, a relatively low, wide tin can with holes/vents cut in the perimeter can shield ash from clogging the bottom vent. 12 oz tuna can for example. But to be honest I have a hard time visualizing this since ash will still fall against the little holes in the tin can.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

Well, it didn't happen this time.  I burned every briquette in 7 hours but I can see where that could be an issue.  Jump off that bridge when I get there.

I use the steamer part with holes to hold a tera cotta heat diffuser.

Maybe it's too diffused?

with the steamer flat & the terra cotta both, it may block too much rising heat?

Haven't built one, but from the description, that seems logical......
