Jumbo Joe Expansion Ring
« on: December 11, 2014, 02:49:52 PM »
Found this 18” SS steamer ring on the web
http://www.foodservicewarehouse.com/thunder-group/slstm018r/p365212.aspx

Ordered it for $21 and free shipping during Cyber week :)

It fits the kettle very well

It allows 5 inches of extra headroom so larger thing can be cooked on this grill

It also has a lip that would allow a second grate for extra cooking space

Or for use of one grate at higher elevation for smoking, slow cooking…etc.

Also added a thermometer through the vent hole, no drilling necessary :)

The ring is made of heavy duty food-grade SS and feels very solid and will last a long time…
They also have a 22 inch ring for the larger kettle for $36, but I didn’t get it, since I have rotis rings for my 22.5 kettles.

Nice find!  One could potentially turn this into a DIY kettle pizza. What's the bump out area in the right side of that first picture?

I like that!  With that ring, I could possibly see cooking a turkey on my Outrider …
Well, maybe … It would be fun trying.  :) ;) ;)
Q: How do you know something is bull$h!t?

crumbsnatcher,
I think that was supposed to be a handle, but the actual ring did not have it. The ring has one sold smooth wall with no handles or bumped out area.

The pizza idea sounds really interesting!! Any suggestions??

MacEggs,
Turkey is a great idea. I think I’ll try a whole chicken first and go from there :)

@BBcue-Z  if u could make a cut into the ring and add handles, you could fashion something like the kettle pizza as seen in this pic.  I can't justify the $150 price tag of the kettle pizza.

Add a motor and a spit and that's a perfect roti ring!

Thanks crumbsnatcher,
I don’t think the ring is high enough for that application. I do agree with you though, $150 is too much for that pizza gadget. It can be easily made using aluminum flashing from the hardware store.

@SixZeroFour ,
That's the first thing I thought of :)

Will it fit the older JJ's ?
I'm only 2 or 3 kettles away from being that creepy guy down the street with all the Webers

If the older JJ is 18.5”, then it should.

I wouldn't mind trying one of these on a standard 18 kettle.

If it fits the newer JJ I would "GUESS" that it would fit a standard 18" kettle, but not the older JJs....Right?  (complete guess)
Interested in ANY offset handle SJs you may have.

Dos anyone know if the 22" ring would fit the 22.5" kettle? If its snug enough to control air, could it be a poor mans cajun bandit extender?

If it fits but its not airtight, it could still be used for high heat cooks. it could allow the lid to be raised enough to allow a larger turkey to be cooked on the top grate.

Has anyone tried this?

You could probably use a nomex gasket to fill the gap if it's not airtight.

I don’t think it’ll be airtight, but don’t know for sure since I did not get the 22” ring. The 18” left a very small gap, but the JJ is always starving for air any way, so it wouldn’t matter much. It’ll definitely provide extra room on the kettle though.

Here are other sources for the 18”, since the first website I posted seems to be running low on stock.
