The Romans used to do that kind of thing all the time.......

Don't know what kind of cooker they used......roti of some sort, I suppose?

I'd assume so over a dug up pit. Would take quite the roti. wish there were more shots

I went looking for the Roman equivalent & found some stuff, but got distracted by  a comment on some something-inside-something or other disscussion:

"Above a certain point you need to stop counting in grahams and switch to kilograms or pounds. That thing has 15 pounds of fat in it and as many calories as two and a half gallons of gasoline. In 2,000 years this will be cited as symptomatic of the downfall of the empire.

(applies to this, I believe)

I dunno ... when you have to tie meat together with chainlink fence it might be a touch too big.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

if i had a welder, i could rig a cooker up for it.(this is assuming it's already been properly spitted) dig a pit 6-8" deep and long and wide enough to go a few inches beyond that behemoth's measurements. get some 1" rebar. cut two pieces at 36" each. cut 4 pieces at 4" each. cut two pieces at 10" each. weld two of the 4" pieces in a V shape to each of the 36" pieces so that they make a Y shape. weld the two 10" pieces together at a 90degree angle and then weld one end to the spit. drive one Y piece 12-14" deep 4" past each side(lengthwise) of the pit. fill pit with charcoal and wood. fire the pit up. once it reaches an even heat, put the spitted meat in place. use the handle created by the 10" pieces to rotate the spit 1/4 turn every 15minutes until done.

that would be difficult to cook, eh?  I'd worry the outside is overdone and the interior would be too rare

The monster is wrapped  in metal fencing.  Wonder if it was galvanized.  I agree that I would expect the outside to be burnt and the inside raw.  Are my comments just "Sour Grapes"??  8)
