I bought a weber charcoal grate and was wondering if I could cook on it?

Thanks!

When they are new from the store, the charcoal grates have a thin film of manufacturing oil on them.

It's best to fire up a kettle to burn it off. Or, hit it with a weed burner.  Then, maybe you can cook on it.
Q: How do you know something is bull$h!t?
A: When you are not allowed to question it.

Guess I will take it back and get a cooking grate.  Not worth it and it's never been used

were you going to make a second level or the like?

Like this one JoCool made, only from a full round grate.....maybe trade in on a 18.5 cooking one if that's the case.................

    Covered, damper-controlled cooking.....IF YOU PLEASE !!!

Just season it up like cas iron, and it should be fine.
As a charcoal grate, all the oils are burned off, and thenits exposed to high heat.
It makes rusting inevitable.
I would cut an old cook grate in half and use that. Still gonna rust on the exposed ends of the grate.

+1. Soap and water and a burning off should be fine. The grates are also covered in oil so they don't rust too bad in inventory.

Chicken fat will keep charcoal grate from rusting much & any cuts you make also...

Don't cut on Weber grate$ a generic will do fine...

w/ hindsight, I made it a tri, but I like 1buckie's idea of 18.5 grate

Good point about the Weber grates. I saw replacement grates at Academy for $5.99 (reg price)
