Got turned down from the yellow weber.
« on: November 02, 2012, 06:31:26 PM »
I was out on a stroll today and saw a classic pre 1977 yellow weber kettle and I had to go ask the owners if they were willing to part with it. Sure enough the guy that came to the door was a fellow weber head and love it himself. I need to stop banging on peoples doors and asking for webers. Anyone else do the same??? Let me know I'm not the only one who goes to peoples doors asking for their bbqs.

Nope Kevin, I think you are all alone on this one. :(

Seriously, there is a guy I email every few months that has a trashed red 26 in his front yard that he won't give up. I started by going to his door and then had a long conversation and got his email. Nice guy though. It doesn't always go well knocking on peoples doors, but you don't know until you ask.  :)

there was a red 26 and a really nice looking yellow 22 locally a few years ago.
i kept seeing them and wanted to ask about them.

by the time i worked up the nuts to do so, they were gone.
I hope they at least sold them and didn't throw them away.

If I saw a red 26 I would have kicked the door in with a crazy smile!  :D

It's weird, but I can see my patio and grills from 2 streets away from the right angle and when my redhead is uncovered it sticks out like a sore thumb. I could just see a fellow collector stopping and staring, then trying to get to my house to ask me about it.

Its almost the other way around for me.

I had a local guy e-mail me out of the blue and ask if I interested in his old Red gasser? He said he found me through a BBQ blog, I showed up and it was a Red Weber Junior in pretty nice shape.

Co-workers ask if I saw the BBQ in the scrap metal bin?, and family members all give me a call if they are at a garage sale and see a kettle....It's pretty sad!

Kevin-there are laws against stalking!
I cook on: Backwoods Gater, Lang 36, Hunsaker Smokers, Pellet Pro 22" WSM, BGE's, WSM's, Cajun Bandits, PK Grills, Drum Smokers, Genesis Silver C, Weber Q's, Cookshack 008, Little Chief, La Caja China #2, Lodge Sportsman...oh yeah! Weber Kettles! Kamado restoration and pit modification hack!

When my son was younger, we would walk to the park around the corner. On the way was a beautiful red 22 just sitting in a backyard (this is the land of 10,000 lakes and very few fences ;) ) When I noticed the house was up for sale I asked about the kettle... he didn't want to part with it :( Now when I drive my son to school I cna't help but glance around to see what kettles inhabit the city I live in. There are plenty, but no red heads ::)

Indeed. I speculate that it was a 26. It was in their backyard near a shed and it looked bigger.
At the time, I didn't understan how rare it was.
In fact, when i started researching it - i was convinced that it couldn't be a red 26 - because at the time I couldn't find ANY other references to a red 26.

You got to knock, and knock agian if needed.

I have picked up a 14.5 SMC, red Smoky Joe, a gas kettle and a avocado 18.5 by knocking on doors.  Some were easy, some took over a year to get.  Some I never got.

The best part is that they did not end up in a landfill some where.  Just think about what/who is best for that rare, collectable classic Weber.  Some people would appreciate it going to a good home.

There are no laws agianst knocking on a door, at least the first time.

How about sharing a picture of that red smokey joe? Have you ever picked up an old green panhandle?
