Sage Performer
« on: May 04, 2014, 01:42:07 PM »
So a few weeks ago I picked up a Sage One Touch Platinum.  It was older, I had the idea that I would put it in my Performer cart.  The issue being that you need to put a hole to mount the burner tube.  So I did this mod and I thought I would take pictures and do a little how to.....I know a few weeks back someone did this.  I took a bunch of pictures so you could see how I did it...

So here are the grills ready for the conversion

The inspectors

First step remove the bolts

Unbolt the burner tube, Slide the grill out of the cart..

Now go to the grill that needs the hole put in it.  This is really the most important part.  You need to make sure the tube doesn't interfere with the one touch system.  And you want it below the charcoal grate.  So I took a Sharpie marker and marked the area where the burner tube needs to go....

I drilled a small hole where I wanted the hole to be.  I wanted to err a little high so I drilled above the center line.

The I took a Step drill that drill's a hole to 3/4" of an inch.  THe burner tube is a 3/4" inch tube.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zWWW0ZxJDs8/U2aCoDEiB8I/AAAAAAAAMhg/qd1yHefmW9w/w982-h553-no/IMG_20140504_130936017.jpg

Now you need to file the hole into an oblong shape.  The burner tube is pinched on the end so you need to make the shape to let the tube pass through the wall of the bowl.

You need a pointy half round file it will be the tool you have to use to do this job.  Now your hole should start looking like this

You will need to keep test fitting until you get the tube to go through.

Tube is in....

Now hold the tube where is needs to sit, you may need to do a few adjustments but it should be real close,  mark the two holes with your Sharpie so you know where to drill

And drill the holes, again I use a small drill to get a mark then I'll go back to the step drill and make the hole a little bigger....

I drilled back from the inside to the final size I wanted and it left a burr

I took the file and knocked off the burrs and cleaned the hole up, so here we are all holes done and not much chipping to the enamel all we need to do now is get it all back together

Bolts put back in height is good, now just bolt it in the cart

Here she is all done, my number 1

All said and done it took about an hour to do the whole project...

Nice work, Brian. What's the stripey wood on the sage lid handle?

Very good write-up. I feel as if I could do that now.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

Ahh, you're the person who bought that sage OTP. Would've like to have scored that grill myself.

I laminated Maple and Wenge, then I cut the handle so it looked all striped, it's my favorite....
