So, maybe a half dozen briquettes in the bottom of the chimney, and then load the lump on top of that. Nothing says you can't mix the two

Yeah. That makes sense. Especially with natural briquettes.

Tried this yesterday.. had only a few KBB briquettes that didn't entirely cover the bottom of the chimney and it did prevent most of the smaller lump pieces from falling through..

The smaller bag I got was even worse than RO. It was like gravel size chunks.
