Shark attacks in this area are very rare. The last attack was in 2017 when a shark attacked a person in a kayak in Santa Cruz. The boater was knocked out of the kayak but was unharmed. They identified the shark as a great white from teeth found embedded in the kayak.
Several years ago, my wife and I were kayaking in Bodega Bay and had a great white swim beneath us in the harbor entrance. I saw it first and told my wife to stop paddling and sit perfectly still. It was massive. I could actually feel my heart pounding. A commercial fishing boat was returning from fishing and saw it too. They spoke to us on the boats PA system warning us of the shark. He estimated it to be over 20 feet in length. After the shark passed, my hands were trembling from the adrenaline surge. We haven't been kayaking in Bodega Bay since.
Here is another photograph from Eric taken yesterday.
