Charcoal Chimney
« on: May 05, 2019, 07:52:08 AM »
I recently saw a video of someone grilling and their chimney dropped the coals out the bottom instead of pouring. Now I can’t find the video. Does Weber have a chimney like that...and is it better to drop or pour? Just wondering

Home Depot used to sell a bottom dump chimney, I think it was discontinued... live on the edge and just dump, all the heat and sparks just make ya tougher!...lol

Yeah. Home Depot had it. Looked like a piece of junk to me. I couldn’t get it to work consistently in the store.

Not to mention an accidental bottom opening would be real bad. That’s probably why they discontinued.

I have a Weber chimney and long gloves for when I pour. But wondered if it was a worthwhile idea

Decades before chimneys were available, my dad used to construct charcoal lighting "mechanisms" out of 3 lb. coffee cans that had a wire thru the bottom to hold a punctured lid of the can up above the newspaper for lighting....
When it lit the charcoal enough, he would reach down in with vise grips (heavy work glove on) and pull the wire out to "drop" the charcoal out the bottom, then grab the edge of the can and remove that secondly.......first "chimney" I ever saw.......a good 15-20 years ahead of it's time.....coals dropped onto a Weber charcoal grate, of coufse!!!
"If you want it fancy there is BBQ spray paint at home depot for that. "
    Covered, damper-controlled cooking.....IF YOU PLEASE !!!

FWIW, I use the compact chimney and inverted the cone to increase capacity.

I just saw the instagram ad you’re probably referring to and Chargrill was the brand, looks like a normal chimney but coals release through the bottom

I've got the $5 Walmart and the Weber. Both work great, the Weber does get the coals ready to dump a little quicker though.

I picked up this $10 grill last winter, after taking what parts I wanted off it I now use it just for starting coals.
