A brother-in-law and his family appeared at 5:00, from out of state. I was not informed this would happen. I'd recently come back from the store, thinking I'd do a few burgers. Not so much.

"So, did ya'll make dinner plans?"

"Not really."

"I see."

*********

"Hey are you guys staying for dinner?" It's now almost 6:00 and I've started nothing. Kids/cousins running around having a great time.

"I guess so ... but we ate not long ago, no one is really hungry."

I went back to the store and got peppers and more ground beef.

*********

Lit the coals and made Poor Man's Pepper Stout Beef. Cooked hamburg and tossed in the rest. Stirred occasionally. Did not use the Dutch oven's kid, so that my smoke wood could affect.

I don't mind telling you the conceit worked. We ate late, but of course no one was waiting. My boy was tasked with mashed taters and a sort of Shepard's pie happened.

All good.

It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

Mike in Roseville

Nice save! Many would have called an audible ("Omaha") and ordered pizzas.

*Tip of the hat*
