I know this can vary greatly, but it's hard to find tri-tip in Virginia Beach, other than the little ones at Trader Joe's.

However, we have a butcher shop downstairs, and I discovered they carry tri-tip.  It's USDA Choice, and is grass-fed, but not grass-finished.

$8.99/lb.

Is that a decent price?

LightningBoldtz

Not sure about the price.

"and is grass-fed, but not grass-finished."  are you saying that some say grass fed even though for a portion of it's life it could have been corn fed?
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

It's pretty ambiguous, but the butcher downstairs has grass fed, grass finished beef as well...so there must be some difference since he is saying the tritip is grass fed, but doesn't mention grass finished!

Grass-fed beef is always more expensive than corn/grain-fed beef. I'd say $8.99/lb for grass-fed tri-tip is a good deal. I'd love to just find tri-tip anywhere... it was readily available last year ($6.99/lb, typicallly), but I haven't seen it anywhere in months.

Around here it's $9.99 lb at Wegmans and Trader Joes. $10.99 lb at the Amish market.

Heyjude

Meat in general is a lot higher than last year.. Tri-Tip is a favorite at my house.
On sale at $4.99 lb, it would be a good buy. Its been 7.99 for the last month or so.
Its not Grass Fed as far as I know, so your price for grass fed sounds good.
Just make sure they trimmed off a lot of the fat..
I don't care if you don't like my Avatar, its there for me..

I'd say that's a good price in Virginia for sure.  It's hard enough to even *find* tri-tip around here!

Yeah, Mike.  No one even knows what it is.  I could fork over $55 to join Costco, as I know they usually carry it, but it's a long drive to our Costco.
