I am restoring 1999 SS Performer because the bowl has rusted through. I would like to repaint the frame and fix a small dent in the SS Char Lid. How do I remove the lid from the top frame? Also the ash catcher was just wired to the bottom of the kettle. It doesn't look like there were ever any locking tabs. Did they not have that feature on the first Performer grills that were produced? Thank you for any help.

There aren't many bolts / screws on the grill. Since you plan on painting the frame, you'll want to tear it down anyways. Just start taking bolts off and writing down where they do or take pictures as you tear it down. I've taken a few apart, but don't remember how exactly the SS lid comes off. I don't recall it being difficult as all.
You might want to get new stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers to use when you put it all back together. THey are all 1/4-20 size, just need to match up the lengths. It's a very common size.
