i have a 9 pound butt in my cajun bandit smoker. it's been at 270ish for near 5 hours. meat temp. is 170* would y'all wrap it at this point?

JEBIV

I don't typically wrap. But if your pit is 170 and the meat is 170, it ain't cooking, that is if I'm reading your post correctly

Pit temp?  Bump it up or wrap is standard at the stall or for me the point of patience running low. ; )

170 grill temp was a typo. it's 270. i did the charcoal ring & the temp has been steady. i just replaced the burned half of the ring. i'll bump up the temp for a spell.

Did you check placement of thermometer?? Most spots on butt same temp? Seems stull but a bit long. I'd wrap too.

yup. jabbed it several times. done jabbing. losing too much juice. meat got to 195. i wrapped it & put it back on & choked down the weber. letting it rest while the grill cools. it's already down to 205. ( the grill ). i did the ice test & learned that both my thermowerks curved probes are off. both bought since january. one read 39 & the other read 44. my 2 year old straight probe & the thermopen are both spot on at 32*.

Gringo

Cool on butt IT but not cool on ThermoWorks!  Eat well!

i hate to say this but my cheaper maverick has been a better tool & the probes hold up better. i have another instant thermometer that is every bit as accurate as my thermopen & was 1/3 the money. i just got off the phone with termowerks & they'e sending 2 replacement curved probes.

left the wrapped butt in a cooler for 3 hours. turned out perfect. pulled easily & super moist. resting in the cooler is a great technique. used the remaining fire to grill a london broil. twas a good day on the grill.

Looks perfect, I find it difficult to screw up a butt. most cooks with a butt I barely worry about temps until the last couple hours LOL. It's supposed to be fun

Looks like you did very well!  It's so much fun to play with different methods and seasonings when cooking a pork butt.  I've found that bone in has the best flavor IME....
