I wouldn't recommend painting it as others have noted, instead just clean, enjoy and keep covered when not in use

Damn straight.  Gotta honor those old traditions while we still can !

And I agree 100% about the bread.  I truly miss Sarcone's in So. Phila.

Welcome from Kalona, IA. Good looking Mothership. You are right about going big with it but it is fun to cook on. I wonder if the previous owner of the B code drilled the holes because of water collection problems for them. Enjoy the site and the people here.

Hey, I think I have entered the Weber Hobby in different fashion then most. I came from the Kamado world and my first Weber Kettle was actually an M-Code 1990 "Mothership" Ranch Kettle (go big or go home!). Since acquiring my Ranch Kettle, I have picked up a few other kettles and my interest in Weber has sky-rocketed recently. In fact, I now prefer cooking in a kettle over ceramic grills.

I just picked up a B-Code 1980 Red 22" kettle the other day for $50 in excellent shape, unfortunately the original owner drilled a little 1/2"ish hole in both the bottom of the kettle and the ash pan, I have no idea why? I got it from an estate sale and plan on having those holes welded shut on Thursday.

I also have reached out to @Zavod44 as I'm hoping he is still doing reproduction wood handles. Here are is a picture of my Mothership and the hole in my B-Code I was talking about:

Quote from: strudle on November 02, 2024, 05:24:15 PMMy neighbor handed me this over our fence, he hasn't touched it in over a decade. I'd like to bring it back to life and cook some great food on it. The "code" is H which I believe means it was made in 1986 but the paint has a copper to black style gradient to it? The lid is mostly fine but I'd like to repaint the bottom to match. Any idea what exact color that might be? Thanks for reading and any help!

Welcome to Club Chocolate!
That's an exotic collectible cooker.

You can find some engine or header paints that will hold their color for a while, but I don't think anyone has found one that tolerates the Weber heat. Everything turns black in time.

The battle scars look best au natural IMO. I regret most of my porcelain restoration efforts on my kettles.

I'm rotating through my 26ers for the fun of it right now. I'll probably set up an outrider or cga on the weber table eventually

Looking good Joe!   When I was in California last year, i lived the cooking for one conundrum, too.   I basically made enough for dinner and lunch the next day.   The jumbo Joe got some good use!

A couple more, so tough to cook for one person  when you haven't done it in over 20 something years.
