Title: Crate & Barrell Blue Performer Platinum
Post by: bthorn9435 on March 13, 2014, 05:43:25 PM
I have read that they are stocking a Blue 2014 Performer and I wonder if anyone has put eyes on
one. I would love to know if the color is glossy and not matte like some of the other 2014 colors.
I was all set on Crimson or Copper and now I am down to Blue or Black.

That's weire because blue is supposed to be discontinued but it does show on the crate & barrel website.

Shows in stock and ready for pick up at the C&B that is an hour from me.  That's a little too far for me to drive for pics though.  Pics on their website look glossy, but so did the crimson on the Ace Hardware website.  It would be nice to see one first hand though.

I'd be very surprised if it were built and on the floor. Give them a call?

The store 15min from me shows in stock. I'll give them a call tomorrow to see if it's on the floor.  If they have it on the floor, I'll take my two tone red MT lid to do a side by side comparison and snap some pictures for everyone to see.  More to come tomorrow.

I saw one last night. C&B in San Jose.

Nice blue. Glossy. There was blue over-spray on the mounting tabs which I thought was interesting.

Still nice. Wasn't on sale.     :P

Couldn't you theoretically just go find a performer form last year somewhere?  They have them still in Ace stores around  It's not like it's been out of production for five years.....

We don't have as many ACE Stores around and the one near me doesn't carry a big selection.

There is one at the store near me. I'll go check it out today.

I just took a look at it. It was displayed with a Pizza Kettle installed. It's the exact same blue as the AT dark blue I bought last year. I'll post pics when I get home.

I bought a dark blue AT last year as well. Mine is still unassembled, but I find it amusing that they call it "dark." The shade of the later blues is really quite light. It also seems that the blues are one of the most deceiving colors in photos. Some look like a gorgeous navy in photos, but in person the colors are never that saturated, at least not in my experience.

Here's the pics I managed to get. There was not enough room in the store to get anything decent and the lighting was messing with my camera phone.

Camera flash off

Flash on
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y23/dwnthehatch/WKC/IMG_20140314_184118_987_zpssn9dgrjp.jpg)

It has a little speckling that I could not pick up with my camera phone. It looks exactly like my Dark Blue OTG here:

They also had a bunch of the mini chimneys on the shelf.

It is nice, and the speckling seems consistent with recent production blues. Was it lighter than the photos reflect? Thats what it sounds like from your post, and thats what I would expect.

I think the blues have been lightly speckled for the past few years. I, too, wish that the color was as deep and dark as they look in the Weber promo shots, but any blue is a nice blue.

Does anyone have any comparison photos of this Blue in different conditions so I can get an idea. I was
looking for Dark Blue and I cannot tell from the photos if this fits the bill. Duke Blue is fine with me but I
don't want something to light. I am buying this sight unseen so it's really hard to make the choice. Does
anyone have experience buying online from C&B and how the experience was?

It's a bit darker than the older years.......here's an advert shot:

http://www.crateandbarrel.com/weber-performer-platinum-charcoal-grill-blue/s110848?aff=cj

There's several different views in that ^^^^

Probably about as dark a Blue as Weber's made.....Brian or Craig might know more about this...........

Definitely a step darker than this "EZ" Blue....

Do all the blues have the same level of speckling?
Is it very noticable?

1buckie - If the C&B Color is as dark as your picture I would be fine with that. Can anyone confirm this?

I guess if I did order it and didn't like the color someone would trade me! hehehehe
Worst case scenario would be ordering a different color lid and bowl I guess.

Have not seen the C&B in person, so this is somewhat speculative..................

In the second link to the PB site, look around a bit, that one is newer, see here:

(http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc150/bigabyte/Ribs/2012_05_27/r_IMG_1581.jpg) (http://s219.photobucket.com/user/bigabyte/media/Ribs/2012_05_27/r_IMG_1581.jpg.html)

The first link is an "EZ" & pretty much just like the one I showed.....lighter, but still nice, rich Blue........

This is Brian's Mesa Azul, older ones, somewhat lighter.....

He will tell you though, that there's a pretty wide variance in the color, but I'm pretty sure, generally speaking, the newer ones are darker......

C&B is a higher-end store.  I wouldn't think twice about ordering from them if I needed/wanted to.  Just kinda bummed their local outlet store closed as it was less than a mile away.  Now, the full store is more than the allowed 30-California-minutes away.  lol

C and B has done colors in the past that weren't available before, the gray and the green. So I wish they had gone with a different blue. Now that would really be cool. Not that this blue isn't cool.

I've been getting a bunch of PMs about the pics I took at the Annapolis C&B. The best I can describe the color is lighter than navy blue and darker than royal blue. I can see a hint of purple. The kettle looks different in different types of lighting.  I cannot tell anyone what pic best describes the color since all monitors are adjusted differently. What I did today was buy a can of Pepsi(yuck!), drove back to C&B and took pics of the can next to the kettle. This should give you an accurate example of the color.

Sorry, I've been busy this week and haven't had the chance to snap any comparison pics for you. Looks like the guys helped out with the above pictures. That blue looks beautiful.

Crate & Barrel is a top notch retailer so they'll take care of you if the item is damaged in shipping. If anything, you at least know that a Weber will make it right for you should there be any problems too. Upload some pics when you get it.

Well it's arrived and put together. I must say I am totally disappointing in
the color. It looks more Purple than Dark Blue!!!! Very upsetting, I regret
ever purchasing this thing. My gut told me to stick with Black but I really
wanted a Blue. For record it is an AH and the box says Dark Blue!!!! Trust
me this is anything but Dark Blue. Guys what should I do?  :( :( :(

I will have pics up shortly

UPDATE

Here is the really strange thing, in all the pics taken on my iPhone this
thing looks Dark Blue; however, when looking at it in person it doesn't.

Sorry to hear you are so disappointed in it mate. That sucks. I think a bluey purple kettle would be pretty cool myself.

If you can't return it for a full refund then I think you should get cooking on it, i think you will find that it will grow on you pretty damn quickly. :)

  Awwww, man...... :'(

We looked at this color nine ways from Sunday & thought we had it right.....was thinking you were going for darker than the standard medium-dark blue that a lot of the older ones are........

What most folks would term Navy Blue (which I believe this is a bit lighter than) has a small component of a purple to it......

Really thought we had it whittled down !!!!
Title: Re: Crate & Barrell Blue Performer Platinum
Post by: bthorn9435 on March 20, 2014, 03:23:48 PM
Buckie this thing is Purple not Blue. I called Weber and the lady whom I must say was very rude and I have never
experienced anything quite like that. She basically said they knew about it, that it is what it is. She told me that
I must be color blind and I need to get my wife to look at it!!!! I asked her again about it and she said others have
sent pictures and called but the color is the color. As she put it the color is special to Crate & Barrell. I told her the
box says Dark Blue but it's not a Dark Blue I have ever seen from Weber.
Title: Re: Crate & Barrell Blue Performer Platinum
Post by: 1buckie on March 20, 2014, 03:38:53 PM

"She basically said they knew about it, that it is what it is."

Meaning that they knew it was not accurate to what they implied on the packaging (box) or in the advertising?

Or, they knew that it was a special Blue that is not like their ordinary colors?

This is strange........

Weber, however, is a lot like the IRS in one respect.....

If you don't get a satisfactory answer, wait a day or two & call back, at a different time of day & you may very well get a better, more accommodating answer.....
Title: Re: Crate & Barrell Blue Performer Platinum
Post by: bthorn9435 on March 20, 2014, 03:52:28 PM
Buckie she did say it was a special color but its not, its supposed to be a Dark Blue
per the box. They need to rename this color as it is causing grief for more than me.
She specifically stated she is getting lots of calls on this.

P.S. Wife just got home and she came in and asked why I got a Purple Kettle!!!!!!
Guess I'm not color blind after all.

I see it as I have three options

1 - Return it to Crate & Barrel (This involves taking it apart and repacking it)
2 - Contact Weber again and see if the will help
3 - Find someone who just bought a 2014 Black Performer Platinum that would like this color and trade.

waived the fee for this. So I guess now I am back at square one!

 Ssooooooo..........

What color would you like ?   (not Blue, we've covered that !!!!)

Just Kidding......maybe I could interest you in a good low mileage used model?

The problem is the camera pictures look correct but in person and believe me multiple
people have looked at it, this thing is Purple! I will try and adjust the camera so it picks
it up and send them.

I actually wanted Blue but I guess Weber sent them an off batch as their special
color this year. I should have known something was amiss as they normally only
get different colors than the normal lineup.

P.S. You know I like the Performer but the older model with the recessed hangers
and Black frame looks better than these knew ones.

We need to see some pics of this color...

First allow me to confess that I am a purple person.  I drive a Purple Haze JCW MINI Cooper S.  Purple is my favorite color.

I have been reading this thread and have also been curious about this new CnB color.  Yesterday I was out so I headed over to the big showroom CnB in Uptown.  They had a new blue/purple performer set up in the front of the store and at first glance it is blue.  The lighting in that section of the store was blocked a bit by a awning display so I had to remove the lid and bring it to another part of the store for a better look.  It is indeed purple.  It was overcast yesterday so i didnt get it out into the sunlight but i did what I could to get some pics.  I started looking around that area and pulled a bunch of colored items to get a color comparison and the floor girl came over and asked if I needed some help.  I told her I was checking out the new special color and trying to get some good color pics and the lighting in the store and my iPhone camera wasnt getting a good color shot.  I had an idea and went to a paint store around the corner and grabbed some color chips for a color comparison to give you guys.

these next 2 shots are showing a bit of shading difference when playing with the HDR function on my phone.

I hope this gives everyone a better idea whats up.  This kettle is an interesting color.  Its blue in the shade but has a metallic metal flake in it that gives off a hint of fuchsia and when layered on top of the blue brings enough red for a sense of purple.  Its difficult to describe but I cant place my finger on whether I like it or not.  Its not a shade of purple that I gravitate towards.  This is more blue than purple, but purple is a color you either love or hate.  Im on the fence on this one.  Ill have to go back when its sunny and see it in the sunlight.

Awesome write up, this is exactly what I experienced!! The crazy thing is they are selling these as a Blue and the box says Dark Blue. Mine is going back on Monday. After all the years I cannot believe they quit doing blue the year I get my performer. I wanted Red but the Crimson is dull and I'm not a fan of the Copper. I thought about Green but I need to see one in person. At this point I may go back to Black.

The c&b blue is the same color as the past few years of the OTG. They are blue but have a purplish hue to them. This color is no different than the past few years of weber blue.

That is indeed very much purple. Depending on how the light hits it, it can look blue or purple, but definitely purple from those pictures. Have you thought about brick red?

landgraft,

From my experience this thing looks all purple all the time. The only time it appears blue is if your 20 yards away
from it, or if the lighting is real low. I would think that I would have heard about this by now if others had experienced
what I was seeing. Of course I could be wrong just my two cents.

So based on what your saying, is your the Blue OTG only looked Blue sometimes and Purple 90 percent of the time? Because
that is what I am experiencing. My wife got home and the first thing she said to me is "Why did you get a Purple Grill?"

crumbsnatcher,

I really like the old school Red. As a matter of fact I would love a Red SS or Black SS Performer. I am currently trying to
secure a 2005 Performer as I like that much better aesthetically than the newer ones. If all else fails I will fall back to a
Black 2014 Performer Platinum.

My blue OTG looks blue or purplish depending on the light. I think it's a 2012 or 2013. Still in the box.

I can't, I'm incapable of doing that....Maroonless.........

I agree with both of these fellas. My NIB 2013 is the same. May I be so bold as to suggest that this color should be referred to as Periwinkle? That is the closest recognized color that comes to mind. It definitely isn't Purple, but it isn't anywhere close to Dark Blue, either. I say Periwinkle.

Gotta say I like it!!
When I got my sage green performer I wasn't sure if I liked the colour
But after a couple of weeks it grew on me , and now it's probably my favourite colour
These new blues will probably be sought after in a few years time
They definitely will in OZ

You know the truth is I'm not knocking the color as there are probably many
who would love it. I had my heart set in stone for a Dark Blue Performer that
is why I had such a high level of disappointment. My biggest complaint would
be that they should change the advertising to reflect the proper color. In the end
it isn't a bad looking color it's just not one I prefer.

MINI-
Thanks for posting the pics!  As others have said, this color is the exact same shade that is on my 2013-vintage OTG.  In my opinion, it's not very pleasing when you're close to it, but it's BEAUTIFUL when you back away from it.  (especially with some 'blond' Zavod handles!)

It's interesting to me that Weber calls this a "special" color.   It's no more special than the OTG I bought at HD.com last summer.     ::)

This looks like my 2005 and 2008 perforners. Never saw it as purple. Is this a different blue? It looks the same.
