Title: Yellow Kettle restore finished?...newbie problems. (Pic heavy)
Post by: Lowbrass on November 30, 2013, 06:43:37 PM
Well, it took a little while (including some cold, late nights scrubbing by the porch light) but I finally finished restoring the Yellow "D" code 1982.  At least I think I did (hence "newbie problems" in the title).  Prior to doing the inaugural fire to burn off any chemical residue that may have been left from the paint thinner, laquer thinner, polishes, and cleaners, I sprayed the entire kettle with Crisco canola oil to prevent the battle scars from future rust.  I think I now have reclean the whole thing as I got some wicked canola oil burn on the kettle now.  Anyway, here are links to the two original threads that my brother Bob (B Que) posted and pictures of the entire restore from beginning to end.  Can't wait to get the first cook underway (after starting the cleaning process over  >:( ::) :-[ :-\ :'( ).

First thread:
http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/another-painted-over-yellow-found/

Second thread:

Start of restore and how I basically found the grill (managed to get SOME paint off the lid years prior to taking these:

Starting to clean up nicely, but here is one of 2 major trouble spots on the lid:

Sorry for all the pictures, I am just really proud of this kettle.  Unfortunately, it is now back to work with the steel wool!

I was scared for Hanks kid when I saw the (pic heavy) I was scared too.  BUT I soldiered on and decided to click on it.  Awesome save on this one.  I do have to ask what is all the runny brown stuff?  Is it some polish or something?  That "D" code is wild....

Looks great, LB! That sucks about the PAM causing the brown nastiness.  Hopefully the steel wool does the trick. Can't wait to see the grill in person... with some t-bones on it!

This, is awesome.  Minus the canola oil, but that's minor compared to paint.  lol

Wow, I'm sure that was a ton of work. It looks great.

Instead of coating the whole thing in oil, you could also clean up the rust areas and brush on a little bit of clear coat.

You did an awesome job.

It appears that stuff running down the bowl came from inside the lid?  Did you coat the inside of the grill with something too, Pam, Canola Oil?
Time to get the steel wool and maybe some dish soap out again!  If you don't want to have to worry about re-applying Pam all the time on those chipped areas, here is what I've done and had success with.  Clean those chipped areas VERY good (even with a wire dremel attachment), and then wipe them with alcohol to remove any oils.  Then spray those areas with a 1200 engine block primer.  I have used a grey color.  Clean your overspray right up to the chip edges with a "000" steel wool.  It won't harm the finish.  Be careful not to touch those freshly painted areas with your bare fingertips.  Maybe use a nitrile glove to avoid getting any oils from your hand on the freshly primed areas.  Now, follow up with a 1200-1500 degree paint in black for BBQ grills.   You can find this at any big box store (Home Depot, Menards, Lowes, etc).  Clean up your overspray with the same method described above.  This will give it a clean and rust free appearance on your chipped areas and should hold up for a good long time.  Best of luck!

Thanks for the compliments guys, it felt really great to be finished and finally show off some pictures.  I think I will get this thing clean and then try OoPezoO and/or Jeff's advice on the battle scars when it warms up in the spring.  Right now it feels like I just crossed the finish line in a marathon only to be told I false started and will have to do the first half over.  I'll get a picture of the grill now that that it has cooled off so you can see how bad the oil burned.

I actually purchased VHT Flame Proof yellow paint and sprayed the areas under the vents and the battle scar on the bowl (see picture with slide aside) but it was SO much lighter, it didn't really match at all.  Looked like it would be better for maybe a Homer.  If following Jeff's advice, think I should just go ahead and repaint with my yellow or do the black paint like Jeff recommends?

I've got a couple yellow grills I've worked with on the chips.  There is NO yellow paint that I've found to be an exact match.  I've tried about 10 different ones.  As far as any high temp yellows...none exist for that shade that are close unfortunately.

Well here is the grill - post "burn-off" although it was probably more of a "burn-on".  I don't think this will be too much a problem to get cleaned up, some of it was wiping off with my finger alone.  Pretty wicked looking but I can't wait to get it back to where I had it.

Lowbrass-
If that were mine, I would just spray it down with a degreaser, and let it soak for awhile, then follow up with a steel-wool scrub.  You'll have it looking great in no time.

So you sprayed it with Canola?  Is that what burned all over it?

Yeah, canola.  I guess I figured it would bake on and basically clear coat the thing, like I said, newbie mistake.  Unfortunately, when I hit it with some Simple Green Grill Cleaner tonight it didn't really want to come off.  I packed it up and put it away for the winter.  It is supposed to get really cold here in St. Louis tonight and I was trying to beat the weather.  Hopefully degreaser or oven cleaner will do the trick in the late winter/early spring, otherwise this is going to require as much elbow grease if not more than getting the original black paint off.

Lowbrass, I'd tackle it sooner than later, weather be damned.  get some easy off on there and let it sit a day.  I am not a fan of using pam and etc on kettles.

I see guys using Easy Off.  I have used this only when I wanted to take anodize off parts for my remote control cars that I race.  So Easy Off won't hurt the porcelain coloring on the kettle if you leave it on for a a few hours?  Just want to make sure that when I start on the 5 kettles I have bought over the last few weeks that it won't hurt the paint.

I'm no longer a PAM fan either!  It's not just the weather, it is a severe lack of time as well.  I'll get it, I typed that last night right after getting in from trying to clean it so I was a bit dejected.  I know a couple of you haven't had any problems with Easy Off but has anyone had problems?  I don't want to take ANY chances this time!

I haven't come across issues with Pam on black kettles... Namely my faded MBH 22 to blacken it back up. But I haven't tried it on the colored kettles.

I've had it cut through stuff that Zep and generic cleaners couldn't.

^  This ^  (Just don't by the "low fume" version.  That stuff isn't worth the can it comes in!)

Low Brass-
Don't worry about using oven cleaner.  It doesn't do anything to these old kettles.   For what you have on there, it shouldn't have to sit long to loosen that up either.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Easy-Off seems to have done the trick with removing all that burnt on canola oil.  We had some nice days this past weekend is St. Louis and I was able to get outside and give it a scrub.  It isn't perfect because I was in a hurry and not into putting a bunch of elbow grease into it but most of it came off without a big problem.  The rest I will get in the spring.  I also (unfortunately) came across a couple of areas in which during the intitial restoration, I was too eager with my scrubbing and scratched the finish.  It isn't too bad though and the yellow still looks beautiful!  Can't wait to cook on it in a couple of months.  Now onto Project Red Ranger Rescue!

the stuff at the dollar tree works just as well.

it's simply lye with a spray on propellent.

i use it inside and out. put whole thing in garbage bag, spray it down (don't inhale), close bag and let it sit in the sun for a day.
