That's a major score!...I need a 6 burner. That's s Summit Gold D right? Its on my gasser grail list. Which way do you prefer, north-south or east-west burners? I have yet to work on one...

WOW!!!

I saw one of those for 80 a few weeks ago and tried like mad to get it.
I failed.

FREE is an incredible deal.

You going to cook on it? Or restore and sell to fund your growing charcoal collection?

Awesome score. You just beat me to the post. I just traded a free genesis for the same grill but a built in. Congrats to you on yours!!! Here's mine.  I think it's a C. Not as free as yours but still free.

Thanks fellas.  Yeah, I'm pretty estatic with the find.  Sad part is, the owners gave away this grill and picked up a small POS gasser to replace it.  More money than brains I guess...

That's s Summit Gold D right? Its on my gasser grail list. Which way do you prefer, north-south or east-west burners? I have yet to work on one...

Yes, it's a Summit Gold D.  First for me also as I haven't used nor worked on a Summit.  I'm used to the east-west burners, and like them, but don't have experience with the north-south set-up.  Time will tell.  :)

You going to cook on it? Or restore and sell to fund your growing charcoal collection?

First, I'll restore.  I need to remove the burner tubes as most of the gas ports (holes) are closed off and the igniter doesn't work.  I want to give it a good cleaning and get everything in full running order.  I'll probably use it a few times, including the smoker box and rotisserie, before selling it in the spring.  Speaking of the rotisserie, the "seller" said they never used it.  Installed the bracket and that's all the further it's ever gone.  I plugged in the motor and it works, so there's nothing wrong with it.  :D

I just restored a 4D manually light it and do a good long burn at full heat. It actually unplugged  all the burners when I did that. Saved me a lot of cleaning time too. I prettying let it cool and vacuumed all the ash and it was pretty much good to go after that. The summits get super hot and you will love the burner orientation for griddles and such. esp the fact that you can dedicate 2 burners to a large griddle and still have 4 burners for grilling without the need to swap/convert. Smoker box with a dedicated burner is a big plus. And you don't lose the east/west orientation for rotisserie so... Come on, you can't beat it. Not to mention the side burner kicks ass with a pot, pan, or chimney on it.  Indirect is pretty good too because you can sandwich things between the far left an right burners or just use one. If you plan to sell it, don't use it!!! (Fair warning) I only planned to use my 4D a few times and now I have a 4 and a 6 and I won't sell either. LOL congrats again!!!

Thousand dollar SCORE! There's no way I would be able to fit that in my MINI, but I would have been the idiot on the 8oclock news causing a traffic jam by pushing a huge grill down the street.

Another great rescue, Bman!  You are really something.  Now I might need to make a pilgrimage out to your place to see the incredible collection you've got.  You should print up hats and T-shirts, dude!
Title: Re: Since we don't have a gasser section.... 8/11/14 UPDATE
Post by: Bman on August 11, 2014, 02:37:05 PM
Figured I'd update the thread with what transpired with this gem of a score. Once I told a buddy of mine of my score, he kinda laid claims to the grill once it was restored. Even with that, it took longer than I expected before I got going on this task. One good thing I did --- ordered all the parts just as Mother Weber hiked all of their prices. I was able to source most everything I needed before all the retailers followed suit.

First things first - tear it down for a good cleaning.

.
Most of the frame is leaning against the outfeed table (out of sight of the photo) But the disassembly & cleaning task went pretty easy.

.
I opted for the entire ignition kit replacement
.

.
7 new burner tubes, new ignition kit, and new bottom panel installed.
.

.
Also found a new infrared burner on ebay, so I added that too.
.

.
THIS, is some BTU's
.

.
With the new flavorizer bars installed, you see the smoker box burner tube.
.

.
As designed, this is the smoker box sitting above the burner tube with the new RCPLANEBUYER cooking grates
.

.
Only we took it a step further. I asked rcplanebuyer to make me another flavorizer bar for the smoker tube
.

.
And a cooking grate to match. This way, the entire surface can be used for grilling.
.

.
And here is the finished product ready to roll. It's now living it's new life in Ocean City, MD enjoying the easy life.

.
From the ground up, here's what I replaced.

Casters
Bottom shelf
Right side swing up table
Front burner control knobs
Lid thermometer (not in this photo)
Ignition system
Gas lines
Infrared burner
Burner tubes
Flavorizer grates
Cooking grates (ordered these customized from rcplanebuyer)
Warming rack
Swing up basket

All in all, I put ~$665 into this restore. But that's because the buddy of mine who laid claims to it wanted it to be in like-new working condition and trouble free for years to come. He'd rather spend the money now than deal with the repairs later on. So, I was given a green light to "make it happen" lol It was a fun project and he was thrilled to get a $2,600ish grill for $665

Thanks for looking.

Sick grill and accessories, Bman. Kudos for the rebuild. $600 isn't bad for a grill that will last 20+ years.

Well played Sir..well played. I also picked up one of these bad boys a few months ago. Luckily I borrowed my dad's pickup so I didn't have to roll it down the street.

A word to the wise, friend. Just yesterday I was noticing that the flame on the side burner wasn't working properly. I have been using it as a chimney starter and melted the aluminum diverter. Wahwahwahhh

Awesome Job.  I picking up my newly restored Weber Genesis gasser (In blue to match my kettles) in the next week or two.  My dealer is a friend of mine and they redid his personal grill and he is selling it to me because he knows I been looking for a blue Weber gas grill.
