Title: Weberitis!
Post by: Duke on August 21, 2012, 09:00:53 PM
Yep, it's about time for this thread. Share your tales of how far you have driven and what happened along the way. Including the lies and deceit!  ;)

Please add related pictures, maybe the house you picked it up at, the previous owner or even the gruesome condition it was in when you bought it. This thread isn't limited only to purchases, but you can also tell us what you went through to make a sale and even a little about the buyer.

This should be good! ;D

I have nothing on Weberitis as most of you guys.I swear some of you need therapy. :) I drove 45 miles for a 26er. The guy I got it from was from a different site and was willing to drive down and meet me half way. I did drive 120 miles to pick up my Santa Maria grill.

Years ago, when I first started collecting Weber Gassers, I bought this one cheap (I thought) on Ebay and miscalculated how far it was for the pick-up. Ended up being maybe 280 miles round trip. Ended up giving it away to my wife's sister, and recently re-inherited it after it sat outside for probably 12 years. She used it mainly as a place to set out bird seed. No cover of course. Amazed it didn't rust away, and it still works good, but needs a cosmetic lift. I'll probably end up off-loading it again when I find a better (and closer) version. They do pop up all the time, but 25 miles is my limit. (He says with conviction...)

Went about 350 miles round trip to get my Genesis C model, I was new to to Craigslist and had no idea they popped up as often as they do much closer to home. I was happily surprised to get there and find it was the Gold model with stainless grates and vaporizers though.

Duke, you said lies and deceit, but this is a tell-all from one of my few DUMBASS moments of my own. According to my wife, my budweiser red SJS was only $20............  :-X  I won it at $106 on ebay with $24 shipping this was December, 2010.  I was caught up in the moment, had recently joined "that other site" at that point and had been bitten by the bug and really wanted a redhead SJS to go with my then recently accquired 22.5 red. This may be why I have yet to cook on it or turn it into a mini WSM. I really do want to get my money's worth out of it, somehow. Also, it showed up on our doorstep on Christmas Eve, I got a call from my wife while I was at work, and she WAS NOT HAPPY!!! She wanted to know why I needed another grill, and that's when money was tight and the $20 price just fell out of my mouth.   Yeah, I lost some wife points on that one.  :-[ Not one of my better moments. I still get mad at myself when I think of this!  >:( Because thats not how I normally operate.

The tagline "When I die I am sure my wife will sell all of my Webers for what I said I paid for them". Comes to mind. :D

These are great stories. I will get one together as soon as I can.

My WIFE drove to the Green Bay area to get my yellow Ranger.  When she got there, the guy had another one...the red one I have.  The drive to Green Bay was a little over 200miles.  I was working out of town at the time, and she was off work at the time, so she volunteered to do that for me!  I also drove to Indianapolis for my red ss Performer.  That was a little over 2 hours also.

This could be therapeutic or disastrous, depending on who has your password....

I got a red Seville from a real estate agent ( it was a estate sale where the homeowner had passed away) who had to meet with the Uship driver, who took it to my friends sister house, who stored it for a year until I could pick it up.  I bought a red Sequoia from British Columbia, where the seller had to drive it to the US and put it on a bus to Atlanta, GA.  I once saw a picture of a light blue Imperial (1963) on Flicka. I contacted the photographer who took the picture over two years ago at a antique store.  She could not remember the name of the store, only the city it was in.  I called and emailed the picture to 8 different antique stores before I got a lead.  The store owner remembered the grill, but the man who rented the booth from her was no longer there.  But I had his name and was able to find another antique store he was at.  He had not sold it but lent the grill to his son to use.  In the end I bought the grill but the process took 7-8 months.  I have left notes multiple times on
homeowners houses that have vintage Webers in the backyard.  I have found an 18.5 Jumbo Joe in the middle of I 20, and a red Smokey Joe in a land fill.   My this is fun.

I use the site Imageshack to host pics of the grills. If you have an Android or an iPhone, you can create an imageshack account and load the pics from your phone to the site. Thats how I do it, now as for everyone else.....

Hey Jeff,  glad everything worked out OK with you.  It was a light blue Imperial, similar to one just sold on eBay.  Mine is a little rougher looking.  I will work on posting pictures Friday, when I can sit in front of a regular computer, and not try to figure it out using a moble phone.  I could send something now using a email address.

I have what I call my "Craigslist Retrieval Range" for Free or Cheap Weberitis items.  I work nights and try to schedule a pick up in the morning after 7AM on my way home from work and try to limit my drive to @ 15 mile radius, we're talking Free to cheap here and I can usually live without the item if it doesn't work out. If its something I really can't live without, like the 2011 22" WSM I will drive a little farther and offer a bit more $$ to insure I end up with it, but @ 40 miles is tops for me.

last fall i saw a red stainless performer posted near my house for 40 bucks.
I immediately emailed her, but she was very picky as to pick up times. Between 12pm and 4pm was the only window.

The problem was, i didn't have a car that it'd fit in. And my wife was already in a bad mood.
I 'took a coworker to lunch' that day (he happened to have a truck).

We stopped to get the grill, and the husband was there. He told me that he LOVED the grill, but his wife is apparently allergic to grilled foods. He then told me he only used kingsford mesquite charcoal, and he always added additional mesquite wood to make everything nice and smokey. I immediately understood how his wife was 'allergic'.

He then told me that she was supposed to list the grill for $140, not 40. But he said since I was there already, he'd let me have it for $80.
I looked him dead in the eye, held out $40 bucks in cash, and told him, "I'm taking this grill. Here's your 40. You can call the cops if there's a problem with that"

His wife stepped in and said 40 was fine.

I was so pumped up on adrenaline that i dumped all the shitty mesquite kingsford from the bin in their driveway before loading the grill into the truck. (I realize this was a dick move, i feel kinda bad about it now)

The grill had a rusted ash catcher bracket - so i replaced the system with the newer ring and bucket. I also needed to replace a regulator ($17 at menards)

It currently serves as my garage cooker. I roll it out in the driveway when I smoke. It serves as a workstation and a grill. I love it.

The racks work for potatoes also.....
Here is a reply I got a few weeks back, after I sent them some pics ~~>

Reprint of an e-mail from Weber....

Sep 13,2012
Dear Ken,

Thank you for forwarding the photos. I apologize for the delay in this response.
We are experiencing an unusually high volume of incoming e-mails.

After some assistance with my investigation of the photographed accessories,
I've found that the Shish Kabob Set was introduced in 1963. The last year for this style was in 1977.

The assembly that is attached to the inside perimeter of the kettle is our Corn 'n' Tator holder that we sold from 1963 to 1977.

The Kettle Wok was also sold in the 1960's. Unfortunately we were unable to find exact years for that item.

I hope this information is useful. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Sincerely,
Heather

I can easily use 2x16 corn racks, if the really good corn's available, 32 ears.....
I've used them a few times, but have yet to fill them up on a cook....
May happen at the end of the month !!

The skewers are different sizes across the diameter of the bowl 2 short, two medium, two real long, if I remember right ?
The only bummer, for me, is they are set up to alternate direction, like you see in the photo,Notch on one side, hole for the tip of the skewer opposite
The ring itself is REALLY stout, the tabs that hold it on the rim of the kettle are prob. 3/32"-1/8" thick & the top of the ring locks into the kettle lid nice & tight....
All these things were original owner, I'm sure; I spent a bit of time talking to the guy, doing like I always do & reassuring him they were going to a good home with others of their kind, even tho I had 'turds burning at home !!

Title: Re: Weberitis!
Post by: 1buckie on September 26, 2012, 03:31:46 PM
Yeah they would, 'cause there's a short little stub of the same thickness wire poking up at the center of each fitting...
You just stab the butt of the corn, tater, drummy, or ??*
& that way nuthin' jumps around...
Works good for rotating stuff too....
Just a quick twirl & go....

*Smoked carrots ~~~> Yummm....

1Buckie, I like how you roll.  Your posts here are fabulous.  I have got to find some of those accessories.  And a few more grills too :)

In regards to the topic here, I haven't really had one that I had to really go through a lot to get.  I am new to the collecting and the hunt has just begun for me!
Title: Re: Weberitis!
Post by: 1buckie on September 26, 2012, 07:26:23 PM
Yeah,Ted !!

The stuff gets to just coming out of the woodwork after a time...
That wok was in a box of stuff that my friend cleaned out of a repo'ed house, that's what he does for a living...
They knew they had a big wok, but nobody looked at it closely enough to see it fit Webers...
They have 4 kettles at their house, as I got real tired of dragging mine back & forth.
We do a last Sunday of the month bash & I cook for anywhere up to about 55 people, usually starting pork butts and/or pulled tri-tip the nite before...
They have a giant backyard, they got married there (100 people, I cooked)
I got married there a few years later, friends cooked for 150....

The wife over there found a 250 gallon propane tank grill that had come loose from it's trailer on a freeway entrance....
They hauled it home & we've all been so busy since that he finally hauled it off to scrap (sadly, we couldn't wire it together to get it back up on a trailer & add a firebox... :'(  )

As far as kettles go, Weber has made a quadzillion of them in the last 60 years & ya gotta figger that a certain decent size percentage aren't 2011 Black One Touch models....
They're out there somewhere !!!

I was sittin' out back among the kettles in the moonlight after I read your post the 1st time & thinking: "In 2070, someone's going to dig up a Weber Gourmet System with a kettle somewhere & zap off the rust with some kind of hand-held lazer de-rusting device & start grillin' up some trilobites or whatever livestock is growing by then...."

I'm thinkin' maybe this is just a start ?

Keep your eyes peeled & happy hunting..... ;D

My green Master touch I got in Carbondale thats about 76 miles away, and my newest red two tone performer it might have been only $20 but that one was 92.5 miles out. I also had to barrow my father in laws pick up for that one!! I have a free sjs waiting on me in madison that about 45 miles. So wereritis yep I've got it  ;D ::) 8)

After Ed loaded the prototype it was pretty full. He Put the Lid upfront to ride shotgun.
Then I saw the this pic, not sure how he did it, but he was on a mission. Doesn't surprise me!

No doubt! I asked to see pic"s when he was here. My collection is like a gnat on a Moose's ass, compared to his.

Wow I knew the pictures would be incredible but I had no idea! That Hasty Bake looks brand new! That's the last big piece on my list, there's a rough looking Suburban in Dallas right now but I'm holding out for a Legacy.

Duke, I fear the Rim/Stempy reference about the poor condition of the grills.

I need to get some of these all shined up like the ones I've seen posted here (Jeff's and Troy's for example).  There is a lot of good advice and even some parts (Brian's handles) available here that are very motivating.

All I need now is time and money.

Not at all, those blue ones are awesome Ed! I wouldn't change much about them. I really want those two exact models, but probably won't ever find them out here. I would also really like the 18.5 Galley Que since we have never witnessed one anywhere. Have you ever come across one Ed?

Weberitis is... or possible symptoms, going on the sears replacement parts.com and pricing bowls and lid assemblies for 22.5 kettles and justifying to yourself "building your own" Weber since you have a couple spare leg kits laying around.  Then the wife walks in the room and you immediatly minimize the screen on the computer as if you were looking at pr0n. Delete all internet history containing WEBER-STEPHEN, ebay, Craigslist, ACE, MINWAX, and replacementparts.com.  :-X

Thanks Brian,  I am out of excuses now. I will be taking you up on those handles.

And Craig's 'possible symptoms' sound very specific.

I have deleted a post or two, just to start again when the coast was clear.
